Marketing in the US has a number of tiers. This one is to the unaware. People with an antiquated or non-existent sense of value patronize such sellers. Sadly, I think such people are usually doing so for family/friends with more sophisticated tastes.

My grandma used to buy from them, (before she died in 1984) because they gave her "free" gifts with her purchases. The stuff she got was truly awful. Seriously, HOW many plastic butterflies does anyone's trailer really need?

oh no, it costs more because you can buy anything in the catalog in installments. the stuff is crap because people who need a payment plan for a $15 pair of underwear aren't usually shopping for the finest silken drawws.
