If an asteroid was about to hit the Earth, death would be caused by those flipping through the channels trying to find proof.

Gullibility and trust of an authority figure are two completely different things. If you question every single detail in life- it proves you aren't learning.

No, if an asteroid were to hit the Earth, death would be caused by the asteroid and subsequent changes in the Earth's systems. Death would be experienced by most, if not all - it's not like anyone can get away. "Ok, you sit there and flip through the channels (as if this wouldn't be a top story) while I hop into SpaceShipOne and go into orbit until things settle down a bit..."

This isn't about questioning every little detail in life. This is about questioning information that can directly lead to pivotal, life-changing decisions. Outrageous claims require outrageous proof. If more people stuck to this rule of thumb, we might have never had people believing (and still believing today) that there were WMD in iraq.

And on another note, judging from the article, it didn't appear to be the teacher's intention to get the students to begin questioning information from an authority figure. Just as his plan was so ill-concieved that he didn't consider the possibility of scaring some kids, he likewise probably didn't anticipate them gaining any productive distrust of authority figures.

"Dead Poets Society" is one of the most overrated movies of all time. It's ghastly.

Something like this happened in my school once. The teacher and her assistant told the class that the school had been quarantined because a virus had spread round the school, which was really terrible because a student had died of a really contagious virus (which I can’t remember but some of the parent where actually worried of an outbreak) just a few weeks ago, and they kept the pretence up for about 2 hours. This wasn’t so bad but about an hour in the assistant came in a said that someone had died which left a lot of the student distraught because many had family members attending the school and I think about 3 or 4 people did start crying at various points.
Now that I look back I realize how stupid I was to believe the story and there was about 5 of the top students who sat there with contemptuous looks who hadn’t but most people just intrinsically accept what ever a teacher says.
Although theirs was about seizing the day ours was about an assignment as they made us write about how we felt for home work.
