Dude, fighting the man is never a joke.

Which probably explains why Naomi Klein's stand-up career never took off.

to those of you who purchased these sneakers:

my company, the sleepy hippy haberdashery outlet, are currently producing a 100% cruelty free, 100% organic, 100% anti-fucking-corporation white tee shirt. they were made by hand at a table of 6 cute record store girls, all while smoking weed and listening to cat stevens.

81 dollars a pop.

there's a 'fruit of the loom' tag on the back, but that's just kind of an in-joke.

Allow me to be the one to call you on the irony here.

Joking aside, I wouldn't expect these shoes to be cheap at all; I mean, the entire point is that they're spreading the money fairly along the distribution food chain. And it's high quality. I've seen enough people shred their Converses in a span of three months to be frequently skeptical of lower price sneakers. I suppose one apt comparison could be the adbusters magazine itself -- due to its price it's an indulgence that I support because I can choose to direct my money to receive solid, well-composed content, while I can let a magazine similar in construction (Vanity Fair, W, etc) rot in hell because I don't want to feed that machine.

Meanwhile, those dirty stoned record store girls can make money in other ways. Like showing me their boobies.

Anyway, to redirect this conversation slightly but ride the adbusters coattails, who has ever read Culture Jam? It's an interesting polemic.

please, tell me what adbusters could to to not be pretentious in your eyes. believe in an entirely different life philosophy, I presume. maybe if they agreed with you about everything it would help?

I ordered them when this thread origionally appeared. (well, my wife ordered them for me for christmas) No shoes yet, but we got this email.

I've never heard of these shoes, so I checked them out. personal opinion, ugly, over priced, and hype is hype, I got some beach front property to sell in the Alps if you are buying into this anticorporation crap. propaganda is propaganda.I got better things to worry about than where my shoes come from, who's getting paid, and all that crap.

Own a pair a blackspots? Then you're a shareholder in the Anticorporation.

I am, then when do I get my dividends? how much is my stock worth? when is our IPO? come on people, are you really that gullible?

in other news, how fucking lame is this? if you're life is this sad and pathetic that you'll wait in a line for two days for a pair of shoes, please kill yourself, you'll be happier in the long run.

Real sneakers are made in developing nations using cheap labour, unsavoury working practices, cheap materials etc, and then sold in the developed world for a lot of cash.

Buying these sneakers means that money gets filtered along the production chain in a fiarer way; the people who actually make them get paid a sensible amount. Children don't miss school becuase they're stitching shoes on dangerous machines. Stuff like that.

I really like it when someone quickly scans a post, not really reading, just coming up with some witty responce. then post when you "haven't got the first fucking clue what they're talking about. whatever "

and if you'd read more than that first part, you would have seen that I checked them out, I went straight to their own website to inform myself before making a decision. the shoe pictured in this thread, ugly, the blackspot v 2.0 on the site, ugly doesn't even come close to how horrible they look. all that crap about being

made from organic hemp in a Portuguese union shop, everything about the Blackspot, from its red toe tip and hand-drawn anti logo to its renegade billboards and TV ads, is designed to kick Phil Knight’s ass. We’re aiming to cut into his market share, unswoosh his swoosh and give birth to a new kind of cool in the sneaker industry.

. while I'm sure it's all true, I doubt their reasons for starting this "anticorporation. they are praying on people's desires to "fight the man", and "save the planet". I say greed. are the people going to donate all net profits to charities? will they take no money for themselves? or will they richly reward themselves for starting such a socially conscious company? are the retail stores going to lower their profit % for these shoes? While I agree that Nike sucks, I show my distain by buying a kickass pair of $150 steel toed boots that have lasted 5 years and three motorcycle accident and, still look pretty good, and will last me another 5 years.
