Mormons, since 1830, have given out over 100 million copies of The Book of Mormon for free. It was not published through a mainstream publisher so it was difficult to find in bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders. Now, Doubleday will publish a new edition for $24.95.

"The Lord doesn't need Doubleday's endorsement, but there are some for whom that imprint on the spine says ... this is a legitimate book of scripture," she was quoted as saying.

Religious publishing has boomed over the past four or five years in what Rapkin attributes to a combination of the "Millennium factor," the baby-boomer generation reaching middle age and facing their own mortality, and the Sept. 11 attacks that shook the United States in 2001. […]

According to Mormon belief, "The Book of Mormon" was inscribed on golden plates by generations of prophets, quoted and abridged by the prophet-historian Mormon, and buried in the ground by Mormon's son, Moroni.

Fourteen centuries later, in 1823, the angel Moroni led Joseph Smith to the plates hidden in a hillside in upstate New York. Smith translated the ancient language into English through divine revelation, Mormons believe.

Doubleday, a unit of Random House renowned for publishing Bibles, is initially printing over 100,000 copies of the book, and Rapkin said she would not be surprised if first year sales reached well over 200,000.

Keep in mind, Random House printed over 1 million copies of The Halo Strategy Guide and is expected to sell most of them. But 100,000 is a pretty large print run, especially for a book that’s offered for free over the internet.

Not to mention the commercials with the 1-800 number and the door-to-door missionaries. Why is the Church of Latter-Day Saints blowing such a huge wad of cash to sell something they give away for free? Are there really that many people jonesing to convert to Mormonism?

Yeah, the first time someone told me this I didn't believe them. I thought for sure they were making it up just to fuck with me.

What I would like is a copy of the Book of Mormon in it's original form as translated by Joseph Smith through devine revalation.

You see, Mr. Smith wasn't what one would call, "fully literate," so the original trasnlation may have read something along the lines of, "then Jesus done do some stuff."

I bet no one would be so "un-PC" if you replaced Jesus with Mohammed etc., or the Book of Morman with the Koran etc.

Just an observation.

Everyone, back to your "scene approved" minority bashing.

I'd think that was whack, too. Hell, I think the idea of Jesus being the son of God and having risen from the dead is pretty whack, but it's a whack to which I've been exposed for a long time, and is widely accepted by broad swathes of society, so I've grown inured to it. When I found out about Mormonism, it was not only a new brand of whack, but it was surprisingly different from any vague notions about it that I'd already formed it my head, so it seemed even extra-whack at the time.

More exposure = Good for Mormon minstry. Isn't it all about the converts?

What is the big deal?

Idjiit I thought of the same thing when I started to read this. South Park is awesome.

This is the only thing that would convince me to convert to Mormonism. I don't think Jesus or Mohammad had prescribed underwear for their followers and that really makes for a half-assed religion, IMHO.

You're right of course. FWIW, I don't really have anything against Mormons. Some of the best people I've known have been Mormon - I really mean that. They have a great sense of public service, which I find incredibly admirable.

The fact is that if the whole "Christ" thing happened 200 years ago, it would still seem absurd and people would still be making fun of it. Mormons are just an easier target, that's all. Give them 1800 years are so and people will be a lot nicer about it. wink

Yeah, Mormons are great and all that, but it doesn't mean I can't giggle at their odd little stories. Regardless their insanity, they're at least more tolerant than the Southern Baptists around these parts and that's at least refreshing...But yes, paying for a book you could get for free? Isn't that like buying CDs? ^.~

When I was in college there were endless crazy religious folks who would try and convert me as I walked to class. The worst were the "Campus Crusade for Christ" who would literally follow me to class, then wait outside the door until class was over and then keep following me around. It was infuriating. There were also mormon missionaries there. I found them to be by far the coolest of the lot. They were always pleasant and respectful, and when I would say "Sorry, I'm not really interested" they would usually give me something along of the lines of "OK, no problem, but come back if you change your mind!" It gave the religion a rather positive face to me, especially when compared with other ones that were considerably nastier when I told them I didn't want to hear anything from them.

Ah...the Mormons...they hung the Mr. Smith over here in KC...well Independence really...Why? because they thought he was a heretic. Then they moved to SLC...yet still believe Jesus will return to them in the quaint little church Smith did the translations in...After he ordered the books by pulling it out of a hat. (No I'm not bullshitting any of this.)
