A New Hampshire couple was arrested on Wednesday at a Rochester church after people overheard the woman's plan to sacrifice her children at the altar.

On Friday, Nicole Mancini and her boyfriend were arraigned on three counts each of child endangerment-- in this case, these are misdemeanor offenses. The boyfriend, John Thurber, also faces drug possession charges.

"We could tell this woman was not right," said church secretary Donna Landolfi. "She said, 'Let's go make the sacrifice."'

Police said Mancini told them that Jesus sacrificed himself for her, so she was going to sacrifice the boys to free her soul.

The three children, ranging in age from 2 to 9, were not injured and have since been placed in state custody. Their mother has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Mancini's attorney, Kimberly Shoen, said her client meant the children no harm.

"They were never tied to the altar, there was no blood, there were no constraints for sacrificial use," she said.

You know, no harm apart from the whole killing them part. eeek

Having until very recently been a resident of New Hampshire, I can tell you this is in no way typical of the state; though Rochester is sort of a strange place. Lyndon LaRoche was born there I believe.

Well, there is biblical precedent....Genesis 22, the whole sacrificing Isaac business...

In fact there are a lot of things in the Bible that would warrant the intervention of Social Services wink

Yeah, but God changed his mind at the end, and just took Abrahams foreskin instead. Oddball.

Well, God asked Abraham to kill Isacc, then at the last second revealed that it was only a test, and instead took Abraham's foreskin, and the foreskin of all Jews after, as a sign of their covenant.

I thought it was because they lived in a very hot, dry climate, and a circumcision would help with cleanliness. I mean, I can understand how it became "a sign of the covenant" to tie it in with the religion, but weren't the original reasons for circumcision and not eating pork the fact they lived in a hot, dry area?

This is a serious question. I'm not debating or anything.

There isn't a clear answer on this one, afaik. The truth is that a lot of religious practices are designed simply to give a group of people a common identity - to seperate themselves from others. Supposedly the not-eating-pork thing isn't really related to any practical reason other that it being different from what gentiles did.
