Recommend some, because I'm on a horror movie kick.

When I say creepy, I mean horror/ghost/whatever movies that don't have to resort to being really gross to scare people. Movies that are meant to frighten you but that are also well made and interesting.

Ones I've seen and liked:
The Grudge (just saw the original, Ju-on, which is much better than the remake, even though it's done by the same director)
The Devil's Backbone (not really just a horror movie but the scary parts are pretty creepy, and it's well made)
The Ring, of course
The Others

I'm looking for more stuff like that. So, any ideas?

this is going out on a limb, because even on the off chance that you have heard of it, i have no idea where you would find it

but there is this DVD (i only have it on VCD) called 'three', which is a collection of 3 featurettes from 3 different asian countries, each having to do with the relationship between life and death. the korean one, 'memories', is seriously ten times as frightening as 'the ring', and it is that same sort of ethereal, raven-haired-girl brain horror

It's from the early eighties, and it's called "Alone in the Dark". It stars Martin Landau, who wins Creepiest Grin of the Fucking Decade. If you are afraid of people looking in your windows and such, this is the movie for you.

Oh, and it's worth it for a performance of a song called "Chop Up Your Mother" by a band called The Sic Fucks. (I kid you not).

Edited to add: A HUGE "YES" for Session 9. I promise you will love it.

Ha, the first time I ever bought acid was with Roman, the guy who wrote The Attic Expeditions. Even after talking with him about it, I still have gaps.....but I loved the movie

jacob's ladder was really scary.

i watched the ring recently, and didn't find it scary in the slightest. until the very end, just moments before the credits, when i heard a phone ringing that sounded exactly like one of the phones in the movie. i thought it was part of the movie, until i realized it was my own phone ringing. it scared the shit out of me. it turned out to be sean calling about something mundane. i didn't die in 7 days so i think it was just a coincidence.

I actually have heard of it, and have been bugging my local indie video store to get a copy. They might cave in though!

Our phone rang at the end, too. I think I jumped about eight feet, and then I yelled at whomever was calling. I have no idea who it was. I was so scared I don't even remember.

Morgan - Jacob's Ladder is really creepy, but it's a bit long and drawn-out. It's still a great movie. I'm just warning you.

Certain scenes in Titus are genuinely fucking creepy. Not horror in the traditional sense, but more effective than most modern horror ever touches.

My roommate purposely called me around the time when she thought I'd be done watching it (I saw it on video). She was mean.

Necronomicon. It's a collection of short films based on the stories of H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth. Most of it is shite, but the last story rocks me.

I just saw "Saw" tonight...thought it was gonna totally suck, but it was actually very good. Lot's of suspense, good plotline with a few twists, decent acting, and wasn't just total gore, allthough there was quite a bit.

interesting...i had the EXACT same experience, except it wasn't sean calling. i gotta admit, i was a bit creeped when it rang RIGHT when the movie ended.

What she said!!! wink

MORGAN, if you haven't already checked them out, look for:

AUDITION & GOZU (the latter is not really horror, but very strange David Lynch-ish suspense and perverted weirdness) - both titles by Takashi Miike

If you like the original JUON:GRUDGE, then see the Japanese sequel THE GRUDGE 2 which is the 4th movie in the series and centers on a Reality TV Host and her crew being terrorized by the family of ghosts sometime after the events in JUON:THE GRUDGE - this sequel is even better than the new pathetic remake.

I've heard a lot about SESSION 9, which I got the DVD for free, but I haven't watched it yet.

It might be hard to find, but a tv movie called Dark Night of the Scarecrow is hands down the creepiest movie I've ever seen. The only "name" in the movie is Charles Durning. The movie is about this guy that gets accused of molesting a little girl and gets killed by the local rednecks before the real molester is found. Then, of course, the rednecks start getting killed off one by one. Simple premise, but instead of the usual gore they ratch up the creepy suspense for regular tv. Highly recommended.

Great choice - I forgot about that one. I wonder how the remake of that film (starring Jennifer Connelly) will be like?

Remaking foreign horror movies is really "in" lately, isn't it? Though I was glad to see that they kept the original director for "The Grudge" and they're bringing the original director back in for "Ring Two".
