I love Basho... I've thought about getting the English translation of one of his haiku done on my back.

The Narrow Road to Oku (esp. the illustrated version I have) is one of my all time favorite books.

Why not just get the Kanji, since the english translation will be inferior to the actual Haiku, and in truth, Haikus are only 5-7-5 in Japanese, not English, and asides from being 5-7-5 they work on the coupling of sylables rather than strictly sylable count, something like 1-2-2-2-2-2-1 or the like..

Because I think getting the Kanji would be utterly pretentious.

It's only utterly pretentious when people can't read Japanese.

I can't read Japanese. I have very mixed feelings about the whole "adorning yourself with the cultural artifacts of other cultures" thing.

Except for the excerpts from the Koran translated into Esperanto and spoken by Anime cartoon characters that I get henna tattooed onto my cock every week.
