there's a lot of reasons why alcohol is really bad. after all it is one of the leading causes of death in this country, surpassing all illegal drugs combined.

I'd be interested to see some stats for that. Thanks.

check their sources. note that the source report files drunk driving deaths under "car accidents." unfortunately, according to this, tobacco causes more deaths than alcohol and illicit drugs combined.

Thanks for that.

# (2000): "The leading causes of death in 2000 were tobacco (435,000 deaths; 18.1% of total US deaths), poor diet and physical inactivity (400,000 deaths; 16.6%), and alcohol consumption (85,000 deaths; 3.5%). Other actual causes of death were microbial agents (75,000), toxic agents (55,000), motor vehicle crashes (43,000), incidents involving firearms (29,000), sexual behaviors (20,000), and illicit use of drugs (17,000)." NOTE: The study's authors decided to count 16,653 deaths from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes under motor vehicle crashes rather than under alcohol consumption. Previous mortality estimates have done the opposite and counted such deaths as caused by alcohol consumption.

Source: Mokdad, Ali H., PhD, Jam

alcohol consumption (85,000 deaths; 3.5%) +16,653 deaths from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes = 101,653

That's a lot, but it's still less than died from tobacco.

Plus, death by smoking isn't what people should be worried about. Smoking causes sexual impotence.

DONT DO IT. My wife and I talk every day about quitting. Our pack runs out, and 3 or 4 hours of biting each other's heads off later, we always go get another, and another. DONNNN'TTTT.

I've smoked for about 7 years. Don't start. Its a total waste of money. I used to work for a smoking awareness program, so I have a pretty good understanding of what smoking actually does, and while there are benefits to smoking cigarettes the cons far outweigh the pros.

That's an odd way of looking at life. Parsing it down to its very essence, the spirit seems to be "Enjoy your life, it doesn't last forever." And I totally agree with that. But you have chosen to express that sentiment by saying that since life is short one should smoke, drink, and do drugs. If life is so short, and you want to enjoy it, why make it shorter?
