my jadedness and nihilism finally got to me today and i went out and bought a pack of clove cigarettes. bush winning the election was the final straw.
i've never smoke cigs before in my life and only just recently have i bummed a drag or two off my friend, usually while drunk. i'm feeling really conflicted because i really don't like smoking in general, but i'm getting to the point where i just don't give a fuck. i don't like the idea of supporting the tobacco industry or the fact that i might get addicted to them. at the same time, there is something i like about the ritual of smoking, having that little time out and just mellowing out. at this point i can't even finish a cig in one sitting. i've been told that cloves aren't really aren't as habit forming as regular cigs but my doctor has also told me that they're much worse for you. thought i might try and get some advice from ya'll and try and figure out if i should keep on going or stop doing it before it becomes a problem. danke.

I smoked for 15 years. Dont do it. Its a stupid habit. The ritual thing is cool, but you get nothing substantial out of tobacco. Smoke pot instead.

i actually stopped smoking pot because i don't really like it any more. i've been getting really bad anxiety attacks about all the shit that's fuck up with the world. anymore, it just makes me depressed.

clove smoke has something like 4 times the nicotine and 5 times the carbon monoxide. actually, that might have been bidis, now that I think of it. anyhow, you can look it up plenty of places on line, they're definitely worse for you.

they have tobacco in them, so they are just as habit-forming.

but you aren't supporting The Tobbaco Industry when you buy them, so you can feel alright about that. also they are far more pleasant for others to be around, unless others are the one or two people out of a thousand who think cloves smell like ass.

it's your life; don't let anyone else moralize you out of a self-destructive kick. how else will you know what it's like to be on one?

This girl I used to work with started smoking for the lone reason that she could get extra breaks -- she wasn't all that swift, or well liked, to say the least.

I've smoked clove cigarettes on & off since I was about 23. I only get through about a pack and a half & quit. I've done that about 6 or 7 times in 10 years! They smell great & taste good the first few times you smoke 'em. But they leave a nasty odor on your clothes, hair, car, etc. And after a week, you start hawking up gross phlegm. Add the cost ($6/pack) & I'd have to say it's just not a good option!!!
Then, of course, there is the fact that they are like 5 times as bad for your lungs as regular cigs! puke

Luckily, I am very strong-willed & haven't had a big problem when I've decided to quit smoking them. Until the next time I decide it'd be nice to smoke one again... The last time I didn't even get through one pack! I remembered why I'd decided not to smoke them before I was done with it. I can see why it seems appealing, as a kind of social statement of indifference. But it's just not worth it. There're lots of things you can do that are far more effective when you get pissed at the way the world's going!!! Smoking & damaging your body is just kinda lame. blackeyed

You decided to start smoking because you're mad and maybe a little depressed, right? I think I started smoking because I wanted to know why my dad liked it so much, but I was 13 at the time and it feels too late to change now. I'm addicted and I still enjoy smoking with minimal noticable side effects. However, I know life would be simpler without it. It's expensive, especially cloves. It's also smelly, unpopular with others, and makes you go outside in the cold/be late for things/causes people to sit around impatiently waiting for you. Don't bother with it.

i'm hoping this is just a kick that i'll get over after a while. ideally, i'd have no problem with the idea of smoking every now and then, but i just don't want it to get out of hand. i realize that by taking this first step i could get sucked in. one thing i've noticed that i don't really like is the fact that it's too much of a quick, temporary fix. sure, i'll get a good buzz for a few minutes afterwards, but then it's back to reality with a bad taste in my mouth. i'm also pretty cheap so that might help.

Why on earth would you conciously start smoking when you're an adult?

Smoking costs a fortune, kills you, stinks up your clothes, house, mouth and car, enriches the Federal government, turns your teeth and nails yellow, and makes you something of a social pariah.

Getting addicted takes a long time; and there is NO reason to start. But misery loves company, so hurry up and join us.

Oh, wait... you're smokin cloves?! HA! Smoke up, you'll be sick of 'em by tomorrow! Then quit.

Heh heh. Yeah. I've never even considered smoking. There all that was just mentioned by Mr. Stiles, and the only convincing upside I ever read was in Bloom County comic.

"Smoking makes me smell kinda like Humphrey Bogart."
"He's been dead for thirty years."
"Exactly."

Smoking really doesn't cost that much if you buy 'em online at yesmoke.ch. It's easy, it works, and I'm only paying about $1.60 a pack. Sweet deal.

I'll admit I'm playing devil's advocate here and I think it's probably foolish to ever start smoking, but:

only if you smoke a lot. most of the people I know spend 20 times more on booze and entertainment than I spend on cigs (~$7/wk)

only if you smoke inside, actually, which is very easy to avoid when you realise it makes everything stink. and it's also easy to combine a smoke habit with a gum habit

enriches the Federal government,

having a job also enriches the federal government... lots of things you do enrich the federal government

turns your teeth and nails yellow,

maybe if you smoke a lot, but I've never seen this happen in anyone under the age of 60

and makes you something of a social pariah.

not at all! smoking is a very social activity. I've met more interesting people taking smoke breaks or bumming cigarettes from me than through any other single activity. on the other hand, it can also be the perfect excuse to escape the party for a few minutes, if you're into that. which I am.

OMFG, did that guy just write a whole bunch of shit that wasn't stridently anti-smoking?? sho nuff! flame away.

Do you know how addictive niccotine is? The psychological addiction to cigs is very strong. You've already said that you enjoy the ritual, you enjoy the time out. Imagine that habit burnt into muscle memory, every time you sit down you unconciously get a cig out.

The physical addiction, for some people, is very strong.

There are better things that you could do for a short term kick.
