this is as general a question you can ask...and given that, i'd say go w/ a nikon or canon.

I've got a nikon and its allright. I find the flash to be too weak, but its not a big problem because you can usually fix that on the computer.

If you feel like spending a touch more, I use the Canon Elan 7ne for my film work. I have yet to find a need to upgrade because it really does everything I need it to. For the money, it's a damn nice camera and is extremely flexible.

Amazon has some nice deals on the camera, as does eBay, but shop around. Here's a link for ya: Amazon

Remember, buy based on your need...not what's best. Sure, a 5 megapixel would be nice...if you are actually going to need one that great. If you are looking for just snapping pictures of friends and whatever else, maybe printing a few here and there....nothing all pro-photo style, I'd say look more in the 3 mp range. Also, look at the storage capacity, memory cards can be a pain ( and some get pretty pricey)

Film. The process by which you take pictures, develope film with chemicals, go into a pretty red room and play with more chemicals.

Personally, I could never give that up. Digital is fun, but I think it takes a lot of love to do traditional work.

Yeah...I must say that developing film yourself is actually really fun. It just makes it harder to Photoshop.

If you can find it, go for a Fuji Finepix 4900 Zoom ... it should be around the price range now.

4 megapixel, 6x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, ability to take movies, has an internal flash and access for an external flash.

Lotsa bells and whistles, but pretty easy to use. It's got a good body design, it's sturdy and it takes a sweet ass picture.

Obviously, I'd suggest Nikon. Find a $300 Nikon, there you go.

Although, the one drawback with most digital cameras is the delay. You push the "shutter button" and 2 seconds later, it takes the picture. NOT when you press the button. That sucks a little if you are trying to catch any kind of action.

I know there is atleast one camera model that they have fixed that problem. Ask your homies at Best Buy.

No, that's why I make 2 CD-R backups. Let's see you back up a negative - and don't come crying to me when you discover that a single piece of grit inside your camera has put horizontal scratches on the last 10 rolls of film you shot. tongue

I make a point of always keeping the camera clean...any scratch would be discovered well before 600 shots +(HuHumm!) smile

It comes down to a matter of preference...I love printing in large format and so far digital still looks like digital.

A good digital can save you lots of money depending on how you go about it.

P.S. I love these Flim Vs. Digital flame-wars when someone asks for tips smile

That's something I allways thought would be fun to do. Developing one's own photos. Maybe when I'm old and retired or something, It'd make a good hobby.

Because I'm going along, infecting the boards with the magic of 'incentive marketing', I offer you...
cameras4free.com

It's the same people who make the mp3players for free site.

Why it's legit. These are offers where you sign up for an offer and get a set number (7) other people to sign up for trial offers for things as well. The cameras that you can get range from 3-5 megapixels.

Personally, I've been taking a photography class, so maybe the tasty chemicals are getting to me, but the art of actually taking photographs and developing them is a wonderful thing to learn. If you have cheap access to a darkroom, I wholly recommend it. It's a LOT more... satisfying to see these results than just running it through photoshop levels.

But, oh man... digital cameras with different apertures and modes and infared... wow, those're AMAZING toys.

Also, if you sign up for one of the offers, remember to use honest information . They actually DO check up carefully on all of these before ssending you $300 worth of merchandise.
