i highly reccommend people to hunt down south korea's "a tale of two sisters", it's more drama and psychological than scary, it's just a damned good movie that for shame is getting a remake (hope it doesn't happen, hope it falls through, hope it doesn't happen....).
This movie will start playing at my local Rep. Theater on December 17th. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

There are certainly some plot issues in the movie, but visually it's really interesting and it's also genuinely scary and creepy, which I think is sometimes hard to find in the horror genre.
My thoughts exactly. Also, I must say that 'The Grudge' (and 'JuOn' too) has seriously affected my sleeping patterns...or WHERE I sleep
Also: Does anyone know the name of the actor who played the police chief in 'The Grudge'? I haven't seen 'Audition' in a while, but I could have SWORN the police chief and the main guy from auditon are the same actors...Could be wrong...

I don't know his name, but you are correct. He is the main character in AUDITION. I'm not sure if you've seen SUICIDE CIRCLE; he's the main Police Detective in that film as well.

Thought so! And I found out his name is Ryo Ishibashi
I've heard of Suicicde Circle, I wanna see it...
I was so pumped to go see The Grudge...and ended up sooo let down. They kept using the same visual gags (screaming kid, girl's creepy face) ad nauseam, and shoved the poor remains of a plot in at the last second, as if it say "Here it is! We DO have a plot, we DO!!" I didn't jump, I didn't scream. I was just bored.
I neither like nor dislike gore. I thrive entirely on plot, technique, and decent acting. It's one of the reasons I like the movie Spider even though I was struggling to stay awake the first time I watched it (I've never seen a slooower movie...).
I do love The Ring, and I'm looking forward to the sequel (hopefully it won't blow), and I really want to see Saw and White Noise as well.
But as for The Grudge...well...Let's just say I have not been this disappointed since Cat in the Hat.
i saw the grudge on sunday night and was for sure freaked out by it. i actually liked it much more than the ring. ahem: plot issues. i'm curious to know what people are seeing as the main plot issues in the grudge, or what they really expected from a horror movie (besides gore and guts).
I really like the original (it scared me awake for hours the night I saw it, and I was jumpy and skittish for days afterwards, especially in the shower). The remake's pacing was worse, the scares weren't nearly as effectively implemented (although I suspect in part I'd just gotten used to them), the American characters didn't fit...yeah, it was a mess.
Personally I'm of the opinion that horror movies work better if they don't attempt to explain things. I find lurking impersonal horrors in the night much creepier than just about anything they could come up with as an explanation. Not that a plot is *necessarily* out of place (I found "A Tale of Two Sister's rather labyrinthine plot offered quite the sucker punch in the last few scenes, which rounded off the creepiness rather nicely.), but if your goal is purely scariness, why risk sabotaging it with nonsense the way all too many horror movies do?

I dunno, but don't ruin it with an absolutely comical plot device where for some reason you have to look between your fingers. Man, that was retarded. Plus, the original (I still haven't seen the remake) used the same damn scare tactics over and over and kept changing characters. My thoughts at the end "Hahaha, what?"
Unrelated, I love it when people bump shit I don't even remember posting in.
I saw the original and thought it was excellent. Scary stuff.
The remake, I dunno....I turned it off. Didn't scare me at all. I thought it was kind of silly actually.
However, I have a couple of friends (girlfriend included) who were extremely scared by it. My girlfriend won't watch anything similar in style to a Japanese horror flick after seeing it.

Suicide Circle (Club) is great. I really recommend it.

...I don't even remember the finger looking. Was that in the original?
Yeah, at the end so I suppose I should have spoilered it, but since it made no sense whatsoever as far as I could tell I didn't feel the need. One of those crawling children things is coming towards her and she's trapped and then she flashes back to seeing all the different ghosts looking between their fingers so she does that too and she sees the attacking ghost differently for some reason and then she doesn't get attacked. Specifics are vague, but I really couldn't make that up.
