Who saw it? I think it was pretty much the best horror movie I've seen in theatres, and maybe in general. I screamed many times and it freaked me the fuck out. Great visuals, too.

I'm planning to see this tomorrow morning (a matinee). I already own most of the original Japanese JUON series which this movie is based on, and I dig them immensely. I need to buy the 4th DVD in the series, titled THE GRUDGE 2.

I just hope that this remake wil as good as the third JUON film, titled JUON: THE GRUDGE.

The movie critics listed on ROTTENTOMATOES.COM seem to be at the present almost evenly divided on this remake, with an edge towards the negative.

I'm hoping that the film will do well with the true hardcore Horror fans, since the Horror/Thriller I'm working on is partially inspired by it, as well as Japanese Horror films like AUDITION, SUICIDE CIRCLE and David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DR. & LOST HOGHWAY.

my seven year old went to see this tonight, swearing up and down that he would be able to handle it. according to his mom, they left after the first two minutes to go see A Shark's Tale.

and he also says he wants to see The Ring. sure. that's gonna happen...

whatever

There are certainly some plot issues in the movie, but visually it's really interesting and it's also genuinely scary and creepy, which I think is sometimes hard to find in the horror genre.

That part I can deal with. Ju-on pissed me off because it scared me a few times and then got really annoying and too convoluted. I'm curious about this one, but I'll probably wait for DVD.

Oh, I'm hyped about Saw, too, I'm on a real horror movie kick right now. I'm just happy to see more horror movies move towards being creepy and suspensful instead of being gory. That's just my particular taste in horror movies, of course.

I also saw "The Eye" and liked it, and should be seeing Jo-on: The Grudge as soon as Netflix gets it to me.

"The Grudge" got horrible, and quite abrasive, reviews in today's local papers, though strangely the one reviewer (after stating that "the Olsen Twins movie was more scary") gave it two stars.

I still don't get that.

I really really love the PG-13ish horror movies with noises and shit, and I'm really glad we seem to be moving in that direction. Gore doesn't scare or excite me. Horror movies always seem to me to have not lived up to their potential simply because people don't put style and craft into them and just show gore. Gore is dull to me. When I go to a horror movie, I want to be riding the edge of my seat, and I want to be scared out of my mind.

I almost invariably like the first act of a horror movie when lots of weird shit is happening and you're trying to figure out why. It's the second and especially the third acts that bother me. The explanation is usually really fucking lame and half-assed, to the point where I don't understand why they don't just leave it mysterious.

A good example of this would be The Changeling, which was a great haunted house story that was really quite creepy. Until the last part, anyway. It really shouldn't be hard to explain ghosts, but somehow, everyone seems to suck at doing so.

If you like the sort of movie I'm describing though, (to review, the old-fashioned, not-to-gory, suspenseful creepfest) which it sounds like Morgan at least does, a halfway good one that a lot of people missed was Stir of Echoes. It came out shortly after The Sixth Sense - not a knockoff, it was too short a time and was based on a story by Richard Matheson anyway. (Richard Matheson, by the way, is a really awesome author who wrote a lot of classic Twilight Zone episodes) It's the same sort of deal, though. Ghosts, creepy kid, one guy trying to figure shit out. It's by no means the greatest movie, but it has a number of points that made me jump and when it finished, I didn't feel let down. I'd recommend a rental of it.

Sam Raimi is behind it, and he is made sure it was the first hollywood remake to use the original japanese director and crew, and allow them as much freedom as possible, so how could it not be good. I just hope it gets to Australia soon.

I saw the Grudge last night. I was impressed by just how "Japanese" it was. I expected it to be a little less credible, but it was really good. It does feel a lot like "The Ring" but that was to be expected.
I give it four stars out of five.

The ring didn't convince me at all in terms of the suspense...so i think I'll pass on this one. Because really, without the suspense, these movies aren't much.

"Whooo...I'm walking sloooowly...whoooo the camera is panning sloooowly..." Bah. You either love that stuff or hate it. I don't like it personally.

Same here. Any director can do gore. To do suspense well and to really frighten your audience, though, you need talent.

As for The Grudge, can't say is I'll be seeing it, The Ring (USA) freaked me out enough.

It was definatly creepy, but also very interesting seeing differenmt peoples reactions.

The best is the big gangster wanna-be's who screamed like children then left trying to act all tough
