Not the tape. wink

Earlier in the year, after being straightedge for 9 years, I decided I could probably handle responsible drinking and tried a few things.. I quickly settled on scotch as my favorite by far. It's basically the only thing I drink and just slowly sip it neat in very small amounts (ie: about 1/3 ounce at a time).

So what are everyone's favorites? It's interesting to hear what others think of certain malts. I swing back and forth between Balvenie 12yr Doublewood and Lagavulin 16yr as my current favorites. I've also recently discovered this, Laphroaig 10yr, is a great lower-cost alternative to Lagavulin.

(In case you're wondering, yes, being straightedge is easily the wisest choice and is worth sticking to.. in my opinion)

I hate Scotch, nothing that taste's that bad should be consumed,

it's like liquid ass or something

and anyways drinks are supposed to be refreshing not make you feel like setting fire to your mouth.

out of all the scotch's i've tried over the years, i must say that my favorite has gotta be either glennfiddich 30 or the ultra rare cardhu 18.....glen is a classic but if you find a cardhu 18 you're in the zone.....both are awesome, there's also ardbeg which is alright for younger bottles....

I gave some thought to this comment the last time I heard it. I equate it to someone saying they hate all sodas. The fact is that may be true but soda can vary wildly from one type to the next. There are colas, orange flavored ones, ginger ale, etc. Just because someone hates Diet Coke doesn't mean they'll hate Mountain Dew. The only thing they have in common is that they're sweet and carbonated.. taste is 100% different.

The difference between the two I mentioned (Balvenie and Lagavulin) is tremendous to the point you'd hardly think they could both be called scotch if you didn't know better. Balvenie is lighter, more flowery and honeyish with more alcohol ester than Lagavulin that's very smokey and almost salty with a smoother feel and less "burn". Very different indeed.

I sometimes chalk it up to the fact that the people who hate it either simply hate straight distilled spirits, have tried a bad scotch (ie: *ahem* Johnnie Walker Red Label) or tried one that has character they hate. I personally love the smokey taste of Lagavulin but I've heard it described by one as "tasting like old gym socks" even though he loved other scotches. If he had only ever tasted Lagavulin, of course he'd say he hated scotch because that particular type was offensive to him.

Just my thoughts on it. smile Probably worthless..

To make the perfect Rob Roy simply use any Scotch that begins with a Glen.
Hold a dry Vermouth in your hand and whisper vermoooouth over the Scotch.
Careful...not too loud.

Slice off a sliver of lime rind and twist.

Sit back and enjoy you sexy mufucka.

I'll have a scotch on the rocks. Any scotch will do as long as it's not a blend. Single malted Glen...any Glen

You know, that detail was to make him look, hmm, not cheap, but slightly declassé.

I've got this waiting for me at Liquor-mart, whenever I get two hundred and fifty dollars that I feel needs to be spent on booze.

Most of the time, I like the Balvenie Doublewood. So damn good!

I am a fan of Oban, in part because I spent some time there a few years back. The whisky is good, the distillery a lot of fun to tour, and the town is a wonderful little spot on the coast.
