I used to work with this girl who was "disfellowshipped" by her congregation or whatever the term is. Only she went around telling everyone she was still a witness. The problem was that while she worked with us, she was like a stripper on the side, had already had one kid out of wedlock, was having permarital sex, and, last I heard, she was selling her eggs for money but somehow got pregnant yet again.

Yet she would lecture us about signing birthday cards for fellow co-workers. Where is the logic there?

The people in my church were actually generally really nice, it's the church as an organization I have a problem with, and some of their policies.

Tell me, did you guys have a policy of continued harrassment of people who tried to be polite to you? Because when I told some Jehovah's Witnesses that I was happy with my religion (none, but they didn't know that) but I'd take their literature if they were dying to give it to me, they kept checking up on me until I had to be mean. I don't like being mean to people. frown

See that's a bad thing. The idea is if the people take the literature, they have some interest so they keep coming back to visit you. If you don't have any interest, you can always politely say "No thank you, I really don't have any interest in this and am happy with my religion. There is no need for you to return." and you won't get a visit again for a long time. Many accept the literature in hopes that will 'shut them up' and make them go away but that just causes continued visits. Just letting everyone know what to do if you seriously have no interest at all. Most of them are far more understanding than you'd think.

No, but I have heard of the Church of the poison mind.

More unexpected is Prince going from dancing on stage in a G-String to a Jehovah's Witness ...

I work with another girl who is a Jehova's Witness and she is the sweetest, nicest human being on this earth. She really is. She's never pushed her beliefs on me and sometimes we talk about religion but it's more in a "get-to-know-more-about-each-other" kind of way. I used to have this stereotypical view of Jehova's witnesses until I met her.

Oh, I'm sure. I've met Mormons and Scientologists who I consider to be among the nicest people I've met. Still, I have problems with their religions.

Yeah. Not to get into a rant on Jehova's Witnesses or anything, but the girl I work with was telling me that people in her religion don't vote in the election. She said it has somehting to do with the fact that voting for a President is like saying that he has more jurisdiction over them than God. She said they don't vote but they uphold the laws. I don't get it. Fine, I understand the reasoning but the plain truth of the matter is that this is not an ideal world and you still have to live in this country and how can you live here and act like the formation of the laws do not affect you and not take an active participation in how your country (/state/county/town) is run? Ugh, I'm getting angry again just trying to post.... whatever

The thing I never understood was, isn't there something in their ideology that they subscribe to that only like a finite amount of people get into heaven?

Like some number like 140,00 or something?

If that is true, you'd think they would want to keep it to themselves - you know, to make the odds better biggrin

I once witnessed a Jehovah at my doorstep.
But I slammed the door in her face.
So maybe I'm an ex-witness of Jehovahs Witnesses.

They believe that 144,000 go to heaven. Those people are basically selected before they are born and they know that they are part of the 144,000 without having to take any kind of test or anything. But everyone else who are good and faithful to go to a paradise on earth, apparently, so maybe that's just as good as heaven.

Wow, that's news. It sounds to me like the people who say that they "know" they're going to get claimed by the rapture. Which I think sounds like blasphemy, since it claims divine knowledge. But that's interesting. Any other strange things about Jehovah's Witnesses? This sort of thing really interests me for some dumb reason. I've never really believed in a religion, but I'm always interested in their ideals.
