Okay, I'm sure this comes up every month or so...

What's the current best deal for basic cellphone service around? Currently kitschy has some ridiculous plan with Sprint PCS for $20 a month for 40 minutes. Lately she's been going over by about an hour a month, which they of course totally ream us on.

Looking for bare bones "only in an emergency" type service that won't fuck us over when we use more than 40 fucking minutes a month. Don't give a shit about taking pictures, text messaging or viewing porn with the phone. Just the basics.

Yes, I'm a lazy ass - but I know some people really like talking about this shit. wink

I got one of those cheap pre-paid packages from Best Buy. After the refund it cost 5 dollars. The minutes cost more and expire after something like 45 days, but it was worth it for as much as I used it. No bullshit contracts, fees, overage, etc. It was the AT & T service if I remember right. Stay away from those shitty Trac-fones though, they're a rip.

^^ Probably a good idea for the scenario you've described. I've used the same provider, Cingular, for seven years and have never had a problem with them. Most of their plans seem to be geared toward slightly higher volume users, though.

I have the AT&T gophone. I love it. we pay 39.99 a month, 400 minutes and free nites and weekends. good thing about it? you can't go over the minutes, so you can't get overcharged. once you use up your minutes, you can't make or receive any calls. we do well with it. except for this month...we somehow used all of our minutes in two weeks. frown

Looking around, I can't find any plans lower than $35. It looks like we could stick with Sprint and move up to the 0-300 minutes plan. She's only using about 100 minutes a month, but with the plan we're on it's been coming out to about 50 bucks, so upgrading the plan may make more sense in the long run.
