I don't see it that way at all. They aren't making fun of the contestants,

How do you know that? Making fun of the contestants has always been the basic appeal of reality TV, and I see no reason to believe this show would be any different.

Because I haven't seen an episode yet. I was referring to the preview, which I've already said a couple of times.

The preview I saw showed them exercising and talking to trainers and did not poke fun at the contestants or make it appear that this would be, "Hey! Let's laugh at the fatties!"

When I say "they", I mean the show's writers. The assholes sitting at home who choose to make fun of people for trying to lose weight can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

Just think what the fatty could do with all the money, delivery pizza anytime. Don't have to worry about not having lunch money for a while. And the best part liposuction and stomach stapling. (I have no rite to talk I wiegh about 250 lbs)

i love the idea of fat americans sitting in front of their television watching fat americans try to lose weight. do you think they'll get it and try to do something about their own weight or do you think they'll just laugh and eat some more tatter-chips?
god bless this fucking country.
the media can talk about this country's weight problem till they are blue in the face, but it obviously isn't working. i doubt a "reality" tv show is going to do anything.

just as deplorable as that show "the swan"... ARRR!!!

Umm... no. Did you even read the article?

"The Swan" insinuates that you are ugly beyond belief and require a total makeover, plastic surgery, weight loss surgery, blah blah blah. It has a negative message.

This teaches people to lose weight the healthy way and take care of their bodies. It has a positive message.

Yes, i agree, but they know that calling it "The BIggest Loser" cuts both ways...a little classless, if you ask me.

Of course asking a reality show to have some class is like asking for a monkey that shits twinkies....It would be nice, but it aint gonna happen.

Problems:
Once someone hits a healthy weight, don't the rules encourage them to keep losing? Is anorexia good team spirit?

Once someone is eliminated, their team won't have ANY contribution from them towards their weight loss total. That is, once a team starts getting members kicked off, it makes it more and more likely that this will keep happening. Or are the losses averaged per capita on the team and that's how the two are compared?

Yeah. I have issues with the title. That's why I was so annoyed when I saw the ad. Plus, NBC always puts that little image in the bottom left corner to advertise a show. The picture is simply the group of heavy people, in revealing workout clothes, with "The Biggest Loser" in huge letters. That, coupled with the preview I saw (on mute since I hate commercials), prompted me to look for information about the show.

One of my main problems with the show is that the competition is based on straight up numbers, but the girl who comes in at 165 has no chance to win against the guy who starts at 438. I think using percentages would be fairer.

Also, they're not really setting the contestants up for long term success, and they're not being especially healthy about it. Nobody can exercise for 5 hours a day in their normal life, and losing 22 pounds in a week is not very healthy.

I do like that there is no judgmental narration throughout, and I think the show is pretty impressively nonjudgmental on a whole.
