My friend and I are planning a trip to New York City. Where should we go and what should we do??? I thought this would be the best place to find suggestions..

If you've never been to New York before...you really should do some of the corny tourist stuff. Don't let the jaded New Yorkers talk you out of it

You should definitely:

1. Go to Times Square
2. see a Broadway show
3. ride the subway
4. eat a hotdog from one of the street vendors (provided you're not a veggie)
5. Get a hot pastrami sandwich at the Carnegie Deli (provided you're not a veggie)
6. Take a carriage ride through Central Park
7. Run through FAO Schwarz like a little kid

I don't know what your money situation is, but you should definitely, at least once, eat at a blatantly expensive restaurant that you can't afford.

new york's alright if you wanna be pushed in front of the subway!
new york's alright if you like tuberculosis!
new york's alright if you like art and jazz!
new york's alright if you're a homosexual!

new york's alright, new york's alright, new york's alright if you like saxophones!

new york's alright if you like drunks in your doorway!
new york's alright if you wanna freeze to death!
new york's alright if you wanna get mugged or murdered!
new york's alright if you like saxophones!

Do yourself a favor and be smarter than the average tourist; realize that New York city does extend beyond the boundaries of Times Square.

Pick up a copy of Time Out: New York to find interesting things going on. On any given day there's about 50 different things happening.

And pace yourself if you go out drinking - bars don't close until 4AM.

I like Katz's too.

Also, for Pizza, John's on Bleeker is fun and good, or if you want to check out Bklyn, go to Grimaldis, which is the first stop off the A in Bklyn ( High st. ), right under the Bklyn Bridge. We also have a massively bitchin park there that gives wonderful views of the city.

Then you shoulc walk back to Manhattan via the Bklyn bridge. You definitely should walkl over the bridge while you are here.

That show's how long it's been since I've been to the city. I need to replenish my knowledge with a roadtrip.

The only reason I'm jaded at all is because none of the other New Yorkers will go to Time Square with me so we can play laser tag and eat at Applebees.

Maybe because anyone who has ever enjoyed playing with toys knew that store blew. Keep your wood trains, Schwartz. If it don't transform, I don't want it.

-wear comfortable shoes.
-get dirt cheap indian food on east 6th street.
-bring plenty of money for drugs and clothes that you cant get at home.
-dont pay a cover unless there is a band (that you have heard of).
-go exploring around chinatown and the lower east side.
-be ready to drink all night long, every night.
-get a sandwich from pretty much any random corner deli and relish in its hugeness and affordability.
-bring your own cigarettes.
-just get a slice from whatever pizza place you see when you are hungry (except sbarros). those landmark sit-down places are good but whatever.

LOL

the funniest thing is, I work near the big FAO store in Midtown, and take my lunch outside, in front of the store...

I see all these families walking up to the store and the kids absolutely freak out when they see that it's closed.
You can tell that all week their parents have been carting them around to one touristy thing after another, all the while telling the kids that soon they'll get to go to FAO.

And the kids have held it together knowing that fun is right around the corner. But then they read that it is shut down...you can just see that look that only kids have--the 'its j..juu...just n..not ffffair!!" look.

Does enjoying this make me a bad person?

ha-ha....when I was living in Manhattan, the only job I could get was part-time security at FAO Schwartz. I was a plainclothes store-detective. That places loses it's charm real quick when you work there.

The candy was most certainly NOT free. smile One of my biggest jobs was to yell at people for eating before paying.
