Early this morning, Mount St. Helens experienced a second tremor. Tourists have been camping alongside the road, keeping a safe distance and hoping they'll catch a glimpse of the activity.

"I don't think anyone now thinks this will stop with steam explosions," geologist Willie Scott said Sunday at the Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash., about 50 miles south.

Scientists said they do not expect anything close to the devastation of the May 18, 1980 explosion, which killed 57 people and coated much of the Northwest with ash.

"Of course the volcano reserves the right to change its mind," said monument scientist Peter Frenzen with the U.S. Forest Service, which operates the park.

For what it's worth, this interests me a hell of a lot more than Paris Hilton and whether or not she's fucked again.

I'm still wondering how much of a 'burp' the next one will be. Steam or Lava, a active volcano is not something to be taken lightly.

Then again, my mind keeps wandering back to that 'super' volcano that is in Yellowstone? national park.

edit: spelling.

Ditto, although being a relatively safe 40 miles away from the mountain in Portland I am less concerned about flaming lava death than about a big ash fall's effect on my car. That shit goes right through your air filter and into the injection system or carb, wreaking all kinds of havoc. eeek

I used to live like thirty miles from the E base and now I live half a continent away and worry about my family. Its not such a big deal when you still live near it but it's kinda scary that you can't be with you r family if it decides to wipe out the NW in a giant ash cloud.

I certainly agree with you there. I am now extra glad I don't watch t.v. biggrin

Not trying to trivialize it or anything if anyone is really worried. I just have a hard time believing St. Helens is going to wreak devastation on anyone. Did it destroy Portland last time it erupted? or did it just toss some ash into populated areas?

A scarf to filter breathing air and a car wash take care of ash. There's really no need to worry, no matter what the news says.

Steam or Lava won't hurt you if your not directly beneath the volcano. Anybody who is near the volcano already knows the risks, and I don't think many people are there anyway.

Don't worry! It shouldn't be scary, it should be an awesome science experiment, not a reason to be frightened!

I'm tired of all the time the local news spends on this story. They'll actually have breaking news stories in the middle of show to tell us that nothing has happened. As well as what forest service roads are closed.

NEWS: Everything is normal.

Correct. It was evacuated a while ago, and they've closed roads. Some tourists are camping out, trying to get a view of future eruptions, but they aren't letting them anywhere near the danger area.

One thing that the news neglects to mention is that how far technology has come since the 80's.
And we also tend to forget what the News is...
It is sensationalism and it is meant to scare and worry people.
I have no doubt the St. Helens will blow, but come on people there isn't that much to worry about, just think how far we have come since the 80's and realize that the news is probably leaving something out to make it sound better.

Info Here

Not sure if it is rising at a insane rate or not, but is rising. What is scary is what damage it can cause (game over planet earth), and how long it's overdue to pop. But then again, nothing could happen, or we could find a way to stop it. Just never know....
