SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?
No.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?
Earrings, non-visible tattoos are tolerated.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?
No.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?
Depends on the mods, I think. But I have a beard, so I'm automatically suspect.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?
No. It's a choice the person makes. (Same goes for beards.)

SURVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)?

Nope.

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details)

Nope.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")?

Nope, altho company policy is "nothing visible"

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities?

No. Not my current ones. My planned ones, however...

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?

Yes.

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?

Yes.

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

Nope.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

Yes. Sales Assistant at Blockbuster. Altho they only object to the visible ones.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?

No.

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

Hmm. I think i shall need a definition of "discrimination". I will admit that some body-mods make you unqualified (or inappropriate rather) for some positions, such as dishing out meals on wheels to anachronistic old people who don't get it at all, and want to beat you, or worker in a magnet factory. But if discrimination is purely based on choosing between two identically qualified and appropriate people, and basing your decision on something like that, then yeah, that should be illegal.

but if i was hiring a personal assistant say, and two equally qualified people were up for the job, one with body-mods and one without, i would probably choose the one WITH, due to the fact that i think this person and i might have more in common. should that be illegal?

i guess i'm just not sure where to draw the line between discrimination and personal opinion. my bad.

1. I want body mods, but I can't get them because my job doesn't allow them. I don't intend to work at a job where I can't look the way I want, after I get out of school.

2. I worked at an independent coffee shop, and a costume and vintage shop, both allowed body mods.

3. Starbucks

4. Probably, depends on the kinds of body mods the other person has.

5. Yes. I understand that it does make some people uncomfortable, but why should we protect people from that? If it is allowed everywhere, then conservative bastards will just have to get over it. But then again, I don't really think the government should make laws on such things. We would have to get rid of other such limitations too.

i'm a teacher. the 2 schools i've worked in have no problem. one new hire this year has a pretty big irish heart (bleeding heart?) on his forearm and it regularly shows.

URVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)?
Yep. One armband, and one Monroe Piercing, and a tattoo on the back of my neck (I have short hair)

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details)
No, actually. I have been told by employers that they love my tattoos, and the Monroe piercing was actually part of a client's (piercing studio's) contract.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose[sic] your job")?
I have been asked to cover my tattoos when we have our investors come in. And when there are big clients in the office, I tend to remain scarce out of courtesy.

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities?
Probably. But I don't really think I want to work anywhere else.

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?
Oh, most certainly! I think that "modified people" are more likely to be taken as "immature," "reckless," and "unprofessional." Not to mention, "slackers."

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?
Oh no. I am saving up for a chest piece tattoo now.

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?
I'm in it now. I am a girl of all work for a locally & independently owned alternative radio station.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?
I was an intern for a classical radio station in New York City. They weren't so fond when I showed up to the office on the weekend wearing a tank top with my back piece showing.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?
No. I fully believe that my boyfriend and I will marry and he'll become a millionaire, and I can work at a record store, piercing parlor, or punk rock bookstore.

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?
Unfortunately, unlike sexual preference or race, body modification is a choice. I think that it will become more widely accepted as time goes on, and thus it will become easier for modified people to get jobs, keep jobs, and get promotions.

Hey just an old gal here..but hanging onto my youth haha...seriously though I'm 38 and taking my 17 y/o to get her nose pierced. Finally talked her out of tattoos but if she knew I had my boob pierced shed die(like Im her mom) Too challenged to answer your questions in order but wanted to say that if you have a "white collar" Sales job..which is what I've done for 15 years plus..that visible body mods could definitely make a difference in whether your hired. IF you work for a conservative establishment that is.. some periodicals, would be different I'm sure.
Worked for the phone company in advertising and they discriminated BAD-- it was sick. Maybe a small nose piercing, subtle brow perhaps could get away with..but thats it!. A big spike sticking out my breast haha..now THAT actually got me some sales.. but otherwise FORGET IT. wink Should discrimination in any form be illegal?? YES!!! But just try to enforce it..they couldnt even enforce discrimination against being ugly / fat etc in my advertising job..totally bogus & unfair but the way it is i guess.

My first post..luv the site biggrin

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

Yes. I can't have bits of metal hanging out of my face when I am driving someone to a wedding, it gets the groom all jealous of my hotness.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

Yes. Student bus driver, ESL teacher, delivery driver, EMT to a limited extent.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

Yes, mine.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

Depends on the job. If we were both going for, lets say, that big promotion at the bank, I'll probably come out on top. Getting a job at a tattoo parlor would probably not go the same way.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

Hmmmm. That seems to be over-reaching things a tad. Is there a huge level of discrimination against people with mods now?

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body mods have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

no, the reason that I don't have body mods is because I'm somewhat of a religious Jew, and you're not supposed to get body modifications, but I might get one some day, but nothing too "extreme"

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

no.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

yes, it was working at Panera Bread, but it doesn't surprise me since families, rich people, and old people are normally freaked out by that around here.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

it would depend, and I can't really say, so I guess no. plus it would depend on the employer's rules and what kinds of body mods, etc., etc.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

no, it's the person's choice whether they wish to express themself in body mods, so if they decide to do it, then they shouldn't be surprised that if in a work enviornment where they have to impress their customers (some of whom might not like to see those) that they get rejected. it sucks, but that's the way it is.

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

No

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

Computer programmer, in the video game industry. Basically there would be no art departments in the industry if we didn't tolerate mods.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

No

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

Not in my line of work, but in the grand scheme of things, I definately believe there are fields where it would be a problem. I've heard in the legal field for example, it's better to be unmodded or at least play unmodded (take out piercings, make up over tatoos, etc.) for interviews.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

No, I think that sounds pretty dumb and is probably covered by existing laws. I do think companies should be penalized for discriminating against modded people.
