A series of raids performed by Australia's Federal Police netted over 150 arrests today, including police officers and the operators of child care centers.

Investigators suspect that the child porn ring may have connections to organized crime groups in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Of particular note is the sheer amount of items and facilities found in the investigation:

I hope everyone involved in that sick piece of human embarassment dies slowly and horrible, such as by having their genitals removed with a fork and bleeding to death. While being kicked in the head by all the families of the poor kids involved. This sort of thing makes me ashamed to be a member or society. forget locking these sick fucks up, just shoot them all in the head, no kids should ever be sexually abused, rapists and pedophiles are lined up head to head, these kids are going to be haunted by this for the rest of their lives, its worst then murder.

A lot of times the behavior stems from deep seeded childhood trauma combined with piss poor impulse control.

Is it just me, or does this make some people to scared to have kids. when you can even guarantee they are safe with their teachers, child care workers, or police officers?

That's part of the reason I do stay home with my kid. That and a few daycares around here have accidentally forgot about small children in the vans and they've died.

The people with thousands of images are people with a compulsive, sexual interest in children. The ones with a few images may be paedophiles, but they could also be people with a morbid curiosity.

I have seen some stuff on TV about paedophiles and the compulsive sort have real trouble controlling their behaviour. The program showed one man who was caught by the police and his computer was confiscated. He went on to get another one and started rebuilding his collection, only to be caught again. This demonstrates the extent of his compulsion, because it placed his liberty at risk.

The psycologists on the TV program said that he was unable to relate to adults in a sexual manner and that instead he related to children sexually.

Is this a mental illness? I guess that most would say so, but he still possessed a rational mind. He was aware that what he was doing was wrong, but he went ahead anyway.

This could be compared to the condition of a psychopath, who has no sense of empathy. Such a person cannot recognise the needs of other people and has no sense of the feeling of other people. However, they may be completely rational and their actions are reasonsed - but without the normal consideration and inhibitions of a person who is not a psychopath.

In English law, I don't think that a compulsive paedophile would be excused legal responsibilty, because their mental illness did not stop them understanding their actions.
