You know that when guys as handsome as Jude Law get labeled as "fags", something is seriously wrong.

They called Cary Grant a fag back in the day.

Yes. It's what's commonly referred to as, "jealousy". smile

I find this whole thing to be interesteing, albeit a tad odd.

The fact is; handsome is a term that was used alot more often year before, and had alot to do with the trends of the time.

Being handsome, by the standards of the day, implied a certain level of both raw physical beauty, and other implied traits, such as refinement, sophistication, strength, etc. Being a "gentleman".

James Dean was the first to break alot of the molds of what was considered attractive. James Dean (like Marlon Brando) had a softer look, more feminine features. James Dean bordered on being "beautiful", the way a woman is. He also broke the appeal of the gentleman; he was a "bad boy", a Rebel. And teenage girl were never the same...

Basically; the term "hot", while not only subjective, has to do alot with attitues and image, as it does with physical beauty. it has to do with personality, a style of dress...flirting with gender roles (the way metrosexual men do).

I think they're are alot of guys today that culd be considered "handsome"; I recently heard comment about (Punisher star) Thomas Jane, having a sort of old-school physical appeal, and I would probably agree. Or Guy Pierce, being another example.

I wonfder if they had contrrol over their image...

In the times when the studios ruled, the actors had just about no control over their images at all. The studios did. And they had a sort of deal with the press for the most part, about only letting out the studio approved images of stars. This broke down in the 50's when tabloids started to get big. Remember Big Bill?

It amounts to the same thing. Someone was able to exert more control over stars' images yesteryear than is possible today, resulting in a more idyllic view of the celebrities then.

Jude Law I can say is one beautiful looking man.

I saw something on tv think it was primetime/60 minutes about how a person face if geometrically proportioned right looks better than those that those that dont..something like that.
