In Teotihuacán. a town just outside Mexico City, Wal-Mart is facing opposition from locals concerning a new store; the town is a major archeological site.

CNN reports...

"What they are doing in Teotihuacán is destroying Mexico's deepest roots for short-term interests like lower prices," local teacher Emanuel D'Herrera told about a dozen protesters outside Teotihuacán’s town hall. "This is the flag of conquest by global interests, the symbol of the destruction of our culture."

The store’s construction is less than a mile away from the tourist park, and the store itself is visible from the 2000-year-old Pyramid of the Sun

Unfortunately, it seems the locals that are protesting are out of luck because the store has already begun construction, and it's doubtful their actions will halt the process.

While my concerns regarding Wal-Mart aren't as petty, I too loathe this institution.

Wal-Mart destroys small businesses, to say the least. They dominate the local economy, of small towns, with an iron fist, then when all facets of resistence are gone, they slowly stop their "roll backs" and stealthily begin raising their prices to MSRP.

obviously everyone does not hate walmart or they wouldnt be the largest retailer in the world. i personally never shop there but people must, and i bet people who even say they hate them end up shopping there instead of taking 30 minutes from their lives to go some where else. fYet another reason while people are pathetic and love to hate themeselves

I love Wal-Mart, but really only because I used to work at K-Mart. You don't know what filth is until you've worked at a K-Mart.

I may love Wal-Mart's everyday low low prices, but I certainly don't like the way they treat their workers... and golly, they could at least put in some giant trees to block their store from view of the pyramid. That's awful.

Wal-Mart is a terrorist organization that wages constant attacks on the working class.
And they won't stop until we stop them.

Wal-Mart is only making the most out of capitalism. There's really nothing wrong with that. I don't understand why people are so quick to point out that Wal Mart works the system. I mean, really.....even "Mom & Pop's Store-o-Rama" would pull the same thing if they turned into a large retail chain. It's the way of the world.

The way they treat emplyees...well, yeah, i take a little issue with that. But realistically, it's only the fault of the people who choose to work there. You have to walk into the job understanding that you're getting the shaft on benefits and overtime and such. I don't feel but so much in the way of sympathy.

I worked at a K-Mart. Electronics. Easiest shit ever. I stocked the shelves for an hour, then watched movies, and ignored customers.

They should burn it down.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart for many reasons I'm not going to go into right now. But come on, did they really have to build it by the Pyramid of the Sun?

How about one in Vatican City. I'm sure they could make a lot of money if they put one right under the Eiffel Tower.

#1- calm the hell down, you're going to give yourself a heart attack.
#2 - eat it. there's a million jobs that need doing. nobody's forcing anyone at gunpoint to work at wal-mart. hell, nobody's forcing anyone who DOES work at walk-mart to not do anything about their shitty treatment.

I have shopped at WalMart a few times, and there is always a strange looming guilt when i buy there. However, my favorite most rockin hoodie sweatshirt (its black holed crochet, but looks like heavy fishnet) came from there. I *heart* that 9 dollar thing. And so do my friends who try to snitch it. But i do not agree with thier balls to the wall approach to the companies they buy from.
They are building one here in Torrance, and it will be close to where i live, as i have avoided WalMart easily because there was never one close to me.... now the bargains shall be tempting. mad

Yeah, the stores are hideously ugly, and this particular case is really awful.

I fully intend never to enter a Wal-Mart ever again once I find something better. But even though I hate my job and the customers are douchebags and the benefits suck, Wal-Mart has put a roof over my head for the past four years. Not everyone can say that about the companies they work for.

Ugh, did I just defend Wal-Mart? Excuse me while I go eat a bullet.

True, one cannot blame the symptoms for the problem. Money is, as always, the true evil at work here. However, it should be the responsibilty of those in prvilidge (either in wealth of money of knowledge) to do the right thing with the power they have.

Well, unfortunatly, when a Wal-mart moves in to an area (particularly rural) it destroys the job market in a number of ways. Most notably: Driving other local stores out of business, leaving people with little or no other employment options than Wal-mart. The businesses that DO survive are forced to lower their wages to stay afloat, and then suprise! the standard of living for the area goes to shit in no time!

And the poor working folk are victims again....

Well, nobody but WAL-MART! They are notorious union-busters! Even say the "U"-word in there and you're gone.
