I'm worried that my new nipple piercing might have an infection. Can anyone give me any advice on the matter? It's a bit swollen with a little discharge. The same thing happened to one of my eyebrows once but it was after someone elbowed me in the face.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

the absolute best thing for that is antibiotics, I had non stop infections in my nipple and frenum piercings for a few weeks and I was prescribed antibiotics for something unrelated to the piercings and it cleared up the piercing infections right up. If not just soak your nipples in a sea salt and water and it should drain it. The usual two a day cleaning with bactine and dial soap works well to.

Cool, I'm currently popping Ibuprofen and looking at it in terror in the thought that it might have to come out.

A) Check the piercing group. There are a few threads on stuff like this that are very helpful.
B) What color is the discharge? How long have you had the piercing?

Discharge and swelling do not necessarily mean infection. It could just be irritated and your body is trying to fix itself.

The only reason I ever took out the piercings was, by accident or because of a surgery I had last june. If you do have an infection it can be stopped. Listen to Destro it's always best to speak to your piercer and even freakpirate is on the right track. It might not be an infectiong it can be sore, irritated or just in a state of repair.

Check www.bmezine.com for some good info on this sort of thing. If it's a new piercing, it's probably not infected so much as just healing or irritated. Nipple piercings are notorious for discharge . . . I've had mine over a year and still get "crusties" every once in awhile. Lymph is whitish to slightly off-white and your nipples *should* be discharging that for awhile.

I assume you're using salt soaks to heal, so just keep those and the ibuprofen up. You'll be fine. Destro had the best advice of all . . . always go see your piercer if you have any concerns. He/she will be able to tell what's going on and give you some good tips and tricks for preventing any irritation you might have. Happy healing!

Don't take it out if there is a possibility that it's infected. That's often a person's first instinct... but if you do that, you could end up sealing the infection inside and creating a much, much worse problem.

Oh, and try this:

Dissolve a pinch (1/4 teaspoon) non-iodized salt (kosher salt is non-iodized, and you can find it in almost any grocery store) in WARM distilled or bottled water in a cup. It should taste like tears-- a little salty but not TOO much.

When ready, either place the cup over the piercing (forming a vacuum-type seal) or dip the piercing into the cup. Soak piercing for 10 to 15 minutes daily.

You'll look silly while doing it-- but it will work wonders. The salt will pull the infection out. Good luck. smile

I was frightened that this would be a rerun of Lotus-Boob. *shiver*

Hope your infection clears up. They're usually not that hard to treat, but uncomfortable as hell.

The point of the salt soaks is that the warm/hot salt water acts as an astringent, and draws the infection out.

How are you going to heat it up if it's in a can?

I broke my parents' microwave when I was little because I thought I was old enough to cook my own t.v. dinner. I accidentally put the fork in with my food. Oops. eeek

you're not suposed to heat it up. I was told when I got my nips done that submerging (sp) the piercing is not a good thing it can cause bacteria to grow...the H2 ocean is a sterile salt water aftercare spray...it keeps em clean...I had a similar problem when I got mine done and used that stuff plus ice I rubbed a lil' neosporine on it for only one day (cause you don't want to cause scar tissue) and it cleared right up....good luck

The point is that the heat in combination with the salt is what draws out the infection. So yes, you are supposed to heat it up. Go check out what BME has to say. Or check out the Association of Professional Piercer's salt soak advice.

As far as not soaking it, if you just dip the piercing in the solution or dab it on it's not going to have any time to draw out the infection. Submerging the piercing in the salt soak isn't going to cause bacteria, it's going to get rid of it.

You are evil eeek

I saw my piercer today, I advised ehr that it only started really swelling and shit yesterday morning, She asked if I had bumped it or anything and I mentioned I had caught myself on a seatbelt. She told me that it was just some bruising and that I had nothing to worry about. She replaced the bar with a longer one to alleviate the pressure from the swelling, I'm feeling great now.

Thanks for the advice folks.
