Norman, OK
February 2004

SEP 03, 2004 12:30 PM

so here in norman, ok (as in many college towns) we have a duck pond. ours in on the SE corner of campus and it is approx. 2-3 acres of trails ponds and...birds. these are like most of the people-friendly birrds on college campuses; they have no fear of humans and will walk right up to you looking for a handout of food.

well, earlier this week, some awesome folks decide it would be a good idea to intentionally harm three of the geese. one was shot with a blow-dart. the second was cut badly on its wing with a large knife. the third (this is the most amazing) was decapitated and the culprit used its blood to write "goose" on a cement fixture in the park.

the two that survived are recovering and the police are still trying to find who did it. i would guess that they will try pretty hard since this is the first attack on these birds in...well...ever. i know there are more pressing crises in the world today, but i just freaked out when i read this in the paper. i was just wondering if you guys had any thoughts, comments, etc. to add.

pretty insane, eh?

That's terrible. Why the fuck would someone do something like that to an innocent, completely harmless, trusting animal? I would like to cut off their head and write "asshole' on the sidewalk with their blood.

It just shocks me that people can do those kinds of things out of sheer malice, and sleep at night.

that's absolutely horrible.

also, solaris, killing for food is one thing. killing and hurting animals for the sake of killing and hurting animals and writing 'goose' on the pavement in the blood of a goose you just killed is quite another.

wow, geese are really emotional creatures, that's gonna traumatize the rest of the flock for the rest of their lifes.
that said, the geese on our campus are absolute badasses, if you tried kicking one of them they'd beat you up and take your money and pants.
you dont feed them bread, they take your lunch and you say thank you.

*applauds

This makes me very sad, and I continue to lose faith in humanity. There are many people who will never see ducks or geese in their lifetime, and these supposed 'human beings' should be held accountable and then some for their ignorant and cruel acts.

If I were a judge, in addition to punishing them for their crime, I'd make it mandatory that in addition to paying restitution, that they be made to watch any subsequent trips to the vet, and have to visit with them so they can see what harm they've inflicted, and hopefully, hopefully they might feel some kind of remorse. frown

i agree completely, i just know certain people who berate me when i show sympathy towards animals in situations such as this or the kelowna cat killer.

There's a place out in the suburbs of Chicago called the Willowbrook Wildlife Haven. While their main goal is to rehabilitate injured animals and return them to the wild, they also have several animals there that can't be released for one reason or another. Nine times out of ten, that reason has something to do with some stupid asshole.

It broke my heart to see their red-tailed hawk that couldn't be released back to the wild because some asshole kid shot one of its eyes out with a bb gun. mad

At La Trobe University in Melbourne, they also have lots of water birds, mostly ducks. Before I moved to Sydney, my gf came down from there to visit me. We walked across the campus in the afternoon, enjoying the sunshine and the lovely greenery.

Well, it was breeding season and there were lots of ducklings waddling around in formation. Apparently we came too close to one brood, and the angry duck dropped its head and charged me. I whacked it with the satchel I was carrying, and it staggered off, pride hurt but otherwise intact.

My gf likes to remind me of how I bravely defended myself against a vicious duck.

That's as nasty as I've ever acted towards campus waterfowl, and I hope they find the fuckers who did what rottenart is talking about.

Uh..........what. the. fuck?! I know I shouldn't worried about this trifle amidst all the horrendous other things they did, but I wonder why they chose to write the word "goose?" Was that to prove they could identify the animal they were so needlessly slaughtering? Or proof that they could spell it? I will never understand why people torture and murder animals just for having the audacity to exist. "Gee, that goose is over there minding its own business...let's kill it!!" This makes me so sad and angry. And I'm ashamed to live in a world where this happens.

they blatently did it just for kicks.
And i'd say its pretty sick to torture anything like that... especially something harmless like a Goose minding its own business.

there's just no need. people like that just need to go home and stick a knife in their own leg and write goose with it.

I aggree with that idea as well.

In calgary we have canadian geese all over the city, one of my favorite things todo, is take photos of them, and watch them go about their buisness. The second most (todo with animals), is to watch the ducks we have as well.

Feh, people like this just piss me off.
