I'm lost
July 2004

SEP 02, 2004 05:38 PM

I know there is a frugal living group, but dammit, I'm not trying to be frugal. If I had the money I'd probably be eating a Condor Egg Omlet right now... but due to some non-drunken (what a surprise) stupidity I lost some money this week, and its a few more days until the good old dole check comes in, and the people I've worked for overseas have YET to pay me since June 10...

There must be other Ramen freaks out there who feel my pain... You can get what like 10 packages of Ramen Noodles for a dollar? It's insane, only thing is you need to eat three of them...

Anyone have any Mmmm Boy El-Cheapo recipies to share for people who don't have the skill to toast bread? A certain SG pally I know snarfs Special K sans milk for a busy on-the-go treat...

A package of Saltine crackers can turn a bit of soup into a sumptuous ANTI-Atkins feast...

I've heard that you don't like to eat much if you become a Speed freak, but I'd rather not lose my hair and teeth and urm life.

Ramen three meals a day will work but you'll be very sick after a while. Trust me... I did it. Not fun. If you're going to do it, invest in some eggs and frozen vegetables. Just drop them in while the ramen cooks. It'll look gross but it's more healthy.

Also, ketchup soup... one bottle of ketchup and tap water goes a long way. tongue

Why Does the Ramen always look better on the package, rather than when I make it... and ooh if you're fancy you can get Korean ramen, which is .69 cents a packet, and they make it look like Pho on the cover, which never turns out the way it looks.

Same reason McDonalds food never looks like it does in the commercials. It's all staged. Then again... how much can you expect from 30 cents worth of noodles and flavored powder.

$0.30?! You're totally getting ripped off. You can get ramen for less than $0.08 if you buy bulk. smile

If you're on a budget, invest in rice. It's cheap and filling. Don't forget the occasional vegetable too - or a scurvy knave ya'll be! ARRR!!!

I once made a whole pot of spaghetti only to find out I didn't have any butter, or (as if this was likely) any spaghetti sauce, let alone the common condiments like Katsup that those Wallstreet fat-cats take for granted.

I like the cholesterol-carbo fest that is about 4 eggs and as many pieces of toast as you can eat.

chop up and stir fry any veggies you have laying about in olive oil, add garlic (fresh or powder). cook noodles. add noodles with a little salt, pepper and a lil more oil to stir fried stuff and there you go.

substitute any starch in there instead of noodles if you want to. chili oil instead of olive oil is a great swap as well.

you should always have a selection of dry spices around, esp. garlic, crushed red pepper, paprika, and cajun seasoning. they make all the differences in the world. but don't buy them from the spice aisle in the store...get them from the Goya or Badia ('international' foods aisle), b/c they are 1/3 the price and way better.

If you can get them, go buy yourself 5 Rustlers Microwave Chicken Burgers. You now have something tasty and filling, and it only takes 70 seconds to prepare smile My girlfriend and I pretty much lived on those and microwave chips this weekend smile

Hey, I snarf that dry Special K cereal just to "multi-task" while driving and making some calls. The $5 organic milk is in my fridge, but what young go-getter has time for an actual sit down bowl of cereal?

If you're strapped for cash and need food...check your local grocery stores for the smash-n-dent sections. Also, some markets sell the older produce dirt cheap. It's still good, but nearing the end of it's shelf life.

I always hit that section up. I's find as long as you use it within a day or two.

screw ramen. buy a can of chili and a baking potato. it'll cost you around 2 dollars. bake the potato, fill it with chili. it's a meal that will keep you full for a very long time.

You can make about 10 tuna sandwiches for 2 dollars. Just get the 50 cent cans, a dollar loaf of bread, and steal mayo from mcdonalds, it comes in little packets. And if you're that poor, you may want to snake the toilet paper while you're in there.

You can usually find cans of baked beans on sale for about sixty cents. One of those fills me up like a regular meal, especially if it has bits of bacon in it. I take them camping.

Put some veggies in the ramen, or scramble an egg. The people posting above me are wise. Eggs will give you lots of protein and energy, and veggies are just good all around... gives you your vitamins. smile

Oh, and spaghetti! I can usually find spaghetti noodles for 50 cents to $1 and sauce for about $1/can if you aren't too picky. One box of spaghetti and a can of sauce will feed me for a few days.

You should find out if you have a local farmer's market. I know there is one locally here in the city on Sundays and you can get insane amounts of fresh veggies and fruits for super cheapness.

Backed beans and toast.

-- 1 Can of baked beans (35cents for the ghetto brand, 70 cents for the classy kind)
-- Bread (what ever you need figure 25 - 50 cents).

Cook the beans and add the bread.

Not only is it inexpensive, but there's oodles of protein in it.
