BTW, it only takes a 6-week course and a high-school diploma (or equivalent) to be a reactor operator in this country. While I'm a proponent of nuclear energy, more reform is required.

I'm pretty sure that's not right. Your story for TMI and Chernobyl doesn't sound right either. I hate reading those incident reports though so I won't try to call you out on that. wink

With Al at the helm, I think it gets a little cooler.

I bet you old Alexander Yuvchenko has a kinky reactor story or two that he's not sharing - the bastard.

Get him some vodka and he'll spill the real beans.

I can only remember what I was taught since I wasn't at either incident (although I can probably dig up the sources if you really feel like looking at them). Feel free to call me out if you have to do so.

The 6-week course was for a basic operations at Diablo Canyon near SLO, CA back in 1994. I found out that I could graduate with a Nuclear Engineering degree from a good school only to work with the folks that took the course. Back in mid-90s, the defense industry imploded and sent all of the PhDs running for the usual entry level positions. This left new graduates to work with the other operators that took the 6-week course route.. I only hope the policies have changed in the past 10 years.

That seems so wild considering all the crap I had to go through.. I could just look up the reports, I think they are on IAEA or NRC's website.

That's one of the reasons I left the industry, and also the fact that I was making more money testing software than I was at Los Alamos. Life was much simpler in those days.

Yeah the civilian nuclear industry is pretty much cornered, they haven't built a new plant since TMI and all the old guys are pretty much still in there since then, the only way you can get a job in the market is if someone dies or retires.

Can I just pause to observe how bizarre it is that there are three people talking shop about working in a nuclear plant on SG?
