A ten-year-old Komodo Dragon has died after falling off a 8-foot partition separating her from her mate.

Six-foot-long Nina died from internal bleeding after she fell trying to reach Raja, who is still in good health and on display, a zoo spokesman said on Saturday.

"Immediate measures have been put in place to prevent a similar incident happening and we are carrying out a thorough investigation into what occurred," London Zoo's curator David Field said in a statement.

Somehow, I think we all empathize with Nina.

Somehow, the idea of a lovesick komodo dragon falling to their death is really, really funny.

Nah.. komodos are too busy eating German tourists... in the wild, at least....

(Trivia: The teeth of a Komodo dragon are identical in structure to those of a Tyrannosaurus rex. The serrations hold bits of meat from kills, which serve as a breeding ground for bacteria... giving the reptile an infectious bite.)

What's really bad is they had already coaxed her down from that same wall before.

Grauniad article

An inquiry was launched yesterday by the Zoological Society of London, which described Nina's acrobatics as "both spontaneous and entirely out of character" despite the fact that keepers had coaxed her down from an earlier attempt to scale the wall using brooms and chunks of meat.

aw, that's so sad...but kinda funny too. blush

apparently, komodo's can sometimes procreate for 24hrs, and it is also known for a male komodo to dismount the female mid-coitus to fight off a male rival, and then hop straight back on.

so maybe he was just lookin for some all-day lovin?

Maybe she wouldn't have went for it if he weren't putting out the vibe.
