It’s hard to believe that Mike Skinner aka The Streets is actually considered a rapper. He doesn’t exactly use melody or do anything like I’ve ever heard before. But he’s enormously popular overseas in his native England and gaining a strong foothold here in America. His latest album is “A Grand Don’t come for Free.”

Check out The Streets official website

Daniel Robert Epstein: What inspired the new album?

Mike Skinner: The most important thing was to make a good album. That was the bottom...

The streets are fucking ace. Mike Skinner is talented as hell... I know people on totally opposite ends of the musical spectrum that find some appeal in his music. He just kinda tells it as he sees it; he talks about things that the majority of young people experience here, both highs and lows. Fucking genius.

At a big corporate bookstore. I was surprised we got this in at all, let alone shortly after the release.

this interview wasn't so hot.

i don't know if it was the interviewer or the interviewee, but it just wasn't that interesting. For a good interview, download the last track on the "grand don't come for free" album from kazaa or something, it think it's called "interview." Mike is funny and gets to the root of the album and the interviewer is a funny as shit also.

Idon't know his first album. 'A Grand' is a great laugh. Like an English version of Eminem, but better. Not crass and not really hardcore at all. One of the most real things I've ever heard. Songs about losing a phone, money and a girl. Everyday people. Highly recommended.
Wake up Hip Hop heads. miao!!

I bought the new album not having heard the Streets before but having read a number of great reviews of both this and the last album. At first listen I was a little disappointed because frankly I thought the beats on the album were a little weak. However, once you realize that each song is really a spoken word narrative with the music serving to support that narrative, as opposed to something you put on to groove to, I think you get a better handle on the album.

It's quite an interesting album, with aspects that make me grin (I love the way he says "fink" when he means "think") and aspects that make me remember similar scenes in my own life (the song where he and his girlfriend split is surprisingly touching).
