A serial sex attacker in the UK has won £7m on the lottery.

Iorworth Hoare bought the Lotto ticket while on temporary release from prison, and is nearing the end of his sentence for attempted rape.

Currently there is no legislation to stop him from keeping his winnings, although Home Secretary David Blunkett has pledged that he will not benefit from the money while still in prison.

There are plans to change UK law so that money won by offenders can be used to help the victims.

Good plan, UK. I think that's quite a fitting idea.

Not to condone rape and whatnot, but isn't prison where you pay your debt to society? Why don't they just garnish his wages for the rest of his life, too?

Edit: I hate to say something as potentially inflammatory as that and then leave for the weekend... it's like throwing a firecracker into the middle of a protest and then hiding. But, well... bang.

I don't know what to think about this...he's a vile human being but he's served (or has nearly completed serving) his debt to society. He could be a changed man, he could not. I can't believe british law doesn't have this covered somehow.

well that's true but it kinda stings that of all the hard working people in the world that buy lottery tickets hoping for a better life it's a rapist with a history that wins the jackpot.
it's one thing letting them out after they did their sentence but to let them out into a life of luxury isn't justice.

I would agree that he's paid or nearly paid his dues to society, and should keep the money after he gets out. Just luck of the draw in terms of the lottery, if we take it away its like saying theres a moral requirement for winning the lottery.

How is it any different than if he had won 2 years before he was arrested? You don't strip people of all their worldly posessions when they commit a crime, so I see no difference in allowing them to aquire additional posessions after the commit said crime.

this has nothing to do with the asshat who won the money, and i'm sure there are a million threads about this out there, but i'm going to say it anyway.

i love the word cunt. love it-- as a descriptive word refering to female genitalia. it makes me rather sad, though, that it's become what some consider to be one of the most vulgar and offensive words in the english language.

that's all. you may now return to relevant posts.

i know it's not legal in any way and i know you're right logically but something about it just doesn't strike me as right, someone who's in and out of prison repeatedly for rape can't be a good person in my mind and there's just people a lot more deserving of that money than him, irrational but i can't help feeling like that.

I agree with you about the nice word for ladybits part, but to be honest the word cunt just isn't that big a deal in the UK. It's a bit like a comma for many people, just scatter a few in any sentence.

You can say cunt to a Scots policeman and not get into trouble, just amke sure there are no convent schoolgirls around.

I think, but I am not sure, that 'ability to pay' is taken into account when setting fines and compensation in the UK. I'm not sure about this and I might have got it wrong.

Also, Blunkett likes to spout popularist nonsense and then quietly drops the plans.

i whole totally agree with you about Blunkett, dose he take as much of a personal interest in every single prisoner in the UK? i think not, his one man crusades tend to piss me off, and all the messuers seams to be unbelievably drastic and outlandish, to me Blunkett is a man trying to make a mark on the British ppl by any means posable.
unfortunately, there ppl where i live (coincidentally the town where this rapist lives and got his ticket from) have some absolutely stupid idears on how to use his money. regadless, he should be left to keep his money, he got it fair and square. he's paid/paying his debt, and no one should need any further compensation, regardless of how much money he has.

and i'm sure there are far richer rapists out there

um, I'm positive I'm going to get roasted for this, but its a LOTTERY. that means that ANYONE and EVERYONE has the same chance to win. to say anyone couldn't participate because of what they did in the past is a pretty dangerous precedent to set, isn't it? And then to say that after your sentence is served you can be arbitrarily be punished more because someone FEELS like you deserve it seems a bit, well, fascist. Sounds kind of like something cough<bush>cough might try to implement (with provisions made for white collar crime, of course.

do you really want to be anymore like us Britain?
