I recently rediscovered the hotness. River Phoenix (RIP frown ) and Keanu Reeves as hustlers? Talk about fucking HOT! The Shakespeare-based script was a little wasted on me, though.

They're hustlers, and River's character is not too good at it because he has narcolepsy. The script is based on Shakespeare's Henry VI, but the film is set modern-day. It drags a little at times, but there's some good acting and Udo Kier makes an interesting appearance.

I think it came out in '91. It seemed shocking at the time, maybe because I was 17. It's worth renting.

edit to say: Directed by Gus Van Sant who always does interesting films.

OMG!@!!!! I haven't seen this movie in years. Putting it on my b-day list right now.

I loved that movie when I was like 10 seriously. My cousin and I were into renting every Keanu movie when Speed came out!

Wow. Now I really want to go rent that and stay home from work.

i loved it when i saw it when it first came out. now it is kind of cheesey...

the video store i got it from was a small local one and they used to tell me about people coming in (who rented it) throwing the tape at them and saying that they will never shop there again, lol.

Gus Van Sants' best is Drugstore Cowbow... but Idaho is a close second. now he just makes shit tho.

Would have been much better movie if say......Keanu was replaced by Crispin Glover ...or hell, even Corey Feldman- That is just me-I thought River played the part very well, and the movie (for the time) was very risque due to the erotic homosexual undertones running throughout the the film. That being said: Go rent Drugstore Cowboy instead-It is Van Sants benchmark and features William S. Burroughs and hard narcotics......two things that make any gloomy indie film of the 90's a plus.

i really like how the movie is somewhat based on the idea of families and what a family should be.

there is Scotts family that seems like a great american family (weathly, concered, caring) and all the time Scott just wants to get away from this and see what else or what other types of family he can have

and there is Mike's family which is very imperfect (mother is a prostitute, father is his brother) Mike's family cant provide security, and he doesnt even know where is mother is, but he wants to fall back on it and wants to rely on it.

there are so many other points and meanings in it i think it gets more interesting the more you watch it

oh did anyone ever notice the reoccuring smilie faces?

from wiki

"Scott is based on Prince Hal, the son of the king in the Shakespearean history Henry IV...The screenplay originally consisted of two separate scenarios: the first was called Modern Days and it recounted Mike's story; a second one updated the Henry IV plays with Scott's story. Van Sant realized that he could blend the two stories together in the manner of the "cut up" technique used by writer William S. Burroughs. In essence, this method involves various story fragments and ideas mixed and matched together to form a unique story. "

essentially, from what i remember, i really kind of got pissed at rivers character because he goes back to power and respectability at the time of his choosing wheras keanu did not have that choice.

I hated this film. I think Gus van Sant is a hack - and this film was his last chance to change my mind about him. I am not a fan.

This film came out long before Van Sant sucked.
