Continental Features’ readers have conducted a poll and have succeeded in dropping Gary Trudeau’s Doonesbury from 38 papers because the comic “created more controversy than other strips.”

Wilkerson wrote: "(I)t is my feeling that a change in one of the features is required. I have fielded numerous complaints about 'Doonesbury' in the past and feel it is time to drop this feature and add another in its place. ... If the majority of the group favors a replacement, you will be expected to accept that change."

Of the 38 papers that run the Continental-produced Sunday comics section, 21 wanted to drop "Doonesbury," 15 wanted to keep it, and two had no opinion or preference. "I wouldn't call the vote [to drop 'Doonesbury'] overwhelming, but it was a majority opinion," Wilkerson said.

The paper is looking at "Agnes," "Get Fuzzy," "Pickles," "Zits," or “another comic" to replace Doonesbury.

First, is there a paper in the world that doesn’t get “Get Fuzzy”? That's just fucking cruel to prevent this wonderful thing from public purview.

Second, I wish that we all could vote on what kind of commentary we get in the news and then prevent the minority opinion from gaining access to it. It makes me feel happy and informed in this glorious democracy.

That's exactly what I was about to say. Boondocks is much more controversial than Doonesbury nowadays.

Glad my paper still gets Doonsbury. One of my favorites, I love it. Although I am disgusted by the fact that none of these newspapers had Zits to begin with. SHAME!

But I love Doonsbury, especially since my local newspaper is so hardcore republican, it's fun to see a different point of view somewhere in that damn rag.

My local paper is notoriously democratic. Which is very odd, considering the maroity of it's readers are Middle class republican Catholics.

True, but "The Boondocks" isn't as consistantly controversial on hot button topics as "Doonesbury". Every once in a while there will be a bunch of strips about hip-hop, pop culture, and other not-so-controversial stuff.

This might also have something to do with the fact that Doonsbury's last few strips have been attacks on Rupert Murdock.

Today's, for example:

I don't hate Doonesbury, and it bothers me that it's being actively ousted. But I would have figured that if it was going to be dropped from papers it would be because a lot of people skip right past it.

But by that token they should have dropped Marmaduke 30 years ago.

Talk about hitting the nail on the head.

Anyway, the thing is, once a strip gets syndication it's very difficult to get it out, mainly because of a general apathy for strips. Thats why Family Circus is in EVERY newspaper in the country but Get Fuzzy and Monty still struggle for attention.

Weak. I know I hate when comics actually have substance.

The Post runs it on a diferent page of the Style section and classifies it as Editorial. Wish other papers would consier this before removing it entirely

Doonesbury appeals to op-ed editors, and just about no one else. I hate it for its predictable, middle of the road, liberal opinions like you hear from Mark Shields and delivered with patronizing smugness. You couldn't have picked a better example than the cartoon posted above. The kids hate it, too. It always comes in dead last in my paper's comics poll.

that's fucking typical, blame a cartoon for causing 'controversy'. just another part of US culture that the rest of the world picks up on while it wilts away domestically. ta

oh this is sad sad news. how can they drop the most ingenious, cutting-edge invective-filled peice of hilarity comic there's ever been. it certainly wasn't because the strip isn't funny or relevant, cos its as good as its ever been. ugh, how depressing!!!!!!1

is it just me or is censorship getting worse by the day? if doonesbury goes, then i give the boondocks till the end of the month, tops.

and i don't buy the murdoch-baiting as the sole reason, especially when he's happy for the simpsons to call him a millionaire tyrant!

like i said in the other news thread about taxpayer-funded g.i. jane nose-jobs...

One thing I don't get...

Does anyone actually LIKE Garfield?

No... I know people like Garfield and Odie and other characters from the strip...

What I mean is the actual comic. Do people read it and actually enjoy it?

It seems entirely mediocre to me.
