Fronted by the charismatic Andrea Zollo, Pretty Girls Make Graves have been rocking in their hometown of Seattle for over three years. With an EP and three 7 inch releases, as well as one album on Lookout! Records during that time, their unique guitar-driven sound (often compared to that of At The Drive-In) has gained the band a loyal following.
This year, things have really taken off for them with the release of their third album, this time released through Matador, The New Romance. Thanks to...
im so glad that you highlighted one of my favorite bands. not to mention that they have abopted the mantle of the hardest working band from the murder city devils... but i felt that the interview could have been longer. the riot grrl thing was a good angle, but what about the future of the band? of course they have alot of history, which is only part of who they are. new influences? are they aware that they are on to something new? was it on purpose or accidential? do they feel presure from the fans of their former outfits that they must live up to high expectations? or is it carte blanche... starting over? empowered women are definately key to rock and roll today because its always been told from an one-sided point of view. they WILL inject someting new into the redundancy of where rock and indie are going. but a close listen of any of their releases would suggest that there is somethng more they might want to say. (oh, for fuck's sake... maybe they do just want to rock!) the A or B? association was cool. but i feel the little bit it was only served as means to just get the name droped rather than get the band heard. they deserved more than that here.
I just want to thank Pretty Girls Make Graves for making energetic, thoughtful, textured, accessible on a hundred levels, studied, and spontaneously original music. Every listen is a surprise. All my gratitude to SG for the interview.
