According to the latest AICN scoop, the upcoming Warner Bros. film based on the Green Lantern comic book series will feature School of Rock star and Tenacious D frontman Jack Black as the title character.

He will be playing Green Lantern in a film that has been described as a “zany comedy version a la THE MASK."

I'm already defending this in the comic book group, but I'll say it here, too.

When a movie is announced, they always have to compare it to something. They're going for funny, and a lot of Kyle's, even Hal's ring constructs were goofy. Don't assume it's going to be Roger Rabbit, they just need to reference something people are familiar with.

This isn't like them making John Constantine a black-haired surfer from Seattle, it's just giving the ring to a goofy guy, which is totally in theme, and there could have been a lot worse casting than Jack Black. So I'll give it a shot.

GL isn't a household name enough to hold up as a movie that wouldn't bomb, even if they poured 150 mil into it... sfx are a dime a dozen these days, so why not screw with the formula a bit... with the right director and a sharp script, it could be funny...

Kevin Smith directing Jack Black in a "wacky" version of the Green Latern. Wow. I cannot contain how bad this will be. Jack Black is okay, but in this? And if anyone cannot remember, "Jay & Silent Bob" really bombed hardcore. His best film was Clerks and possibly Chasing Amy. But outside of that, he's just a guy who hit the lotto.

Good lord this will be bad.

The DC properties aren't even trying to be creative with their movies. After I saw what Marvel has done with some of their recent movies(Xmen I& II,Blade and of course,Spider-man) that made the characters pop off the screen, they gotta start coming correct!

If the Hulk was 40 minutes shorter, it would be much better.

untill it's annonuced, by jack black's reps or warner. i'll be very skeptical about it.

aside from that, i think this is a wrong direction for GL. i think a striaght forward sci fit action movie with john stewert would be better.

Ok , MTV movie awards , Jack Blacks Spider Man spoof. That was funny , if he gets a movie to play around with and be a superhero i think it would be fun. I Know that there is a certain fan base to live up to with it being a comic book , but atleast they can make a super hero movie with a good story base , we dont want to end up with another Meteor Man and ruin Jack Black do we ? no , thought so.

i'm trying to give this the benefit of the doubt...but i can't think of a worse casting choice...and there's a difference between making the movie a little bit funny at times....and making it a complete and total joke. If they go with the latter, I will be really dissapointed that they wasted Green Lantern like that.

I know Kevin Smith respects comics, so I don't think he would do this..; Unlesss Jack Back is gonna buff a up a bit. But that would ruin the greatest band in the world!

Unless I'm very mistaken, this is a joke. If you go here http://www.efavata.com/CBM/GreenLant.htm you will see exactly how far along a GL film is at this point. No script, no producers, no directors, no nothing. The film has merely been optioned and that's it. However, rumors about Smith writing/directing not only a Green Lantern, but also a Green Arrow and Green Hornet film have ben floating around for years. There are a lot of sources closer to the comic/movie industry that I trust more then Aint It Cool, and none of them have any news on this. I would also like to believe that working in a comic shop...I would have heard some of our customers bitching about this.

Kevin Smith was attached to The Green Hornet and never had anything to do with the Green Lantern.
And he's only probably going to write the Green Hornet script not direct because:

"a) I'm too lazy to direct an action movie but b) I never got into this business to make a movie like that. I got into this business to make movies like Clerks and that was the first movie I made. You look at El Mariachi, you can see what Robert wanted to do from the get-go. I had no interest in shit like that. I like movies where people sit around and talk. I never got into this business to blow shit up or make people run. I sent Harvey [Weinstein] an email saying that I think I jumped into this too soon, and I will happily write it but I can't guarantee that I will end up directing this movie. He was like, "I totally get it. Just write it and see how you feel when you write it". So that's where I'm at right now. I don't know if I have an action movie in me."

The Green Lantern with that silly round bastard in it will be crap

The Hulk had good music. About five minutes in, I zoned out and just paid attention to the Danny Elfman score. That was worth some guy buying me a ticket.

Anyway, to the actual subject, I say,"... the fuck?"

I heard a few years ago that J. Michael Straczynski (current Amazing Spider-Man writer, Babylon 5 creator) had a GL script already penned and stored away. I have a bad feeling about this, but I'm a bit skeptical, so I'm not passing judgement until I hear more about it. He could be playing G'Nort, for all we know.
