For the past two years, on the fence surround ground zero, there has been a tribute sign that tells of 9/11 as well as the names of all who perished on that day.

The sign was unveiled in August of 2002 and only just this week did someone finally notice the amazing typo.

The sign, which memorialized victims killed in the Pentagon attack, noted that "September 11, 2002" was a pivotal day for the country and the world

Justin Matley, 21, noticed the error while visiting on July 10th. Later Matley e-mailed the Port Authority and made them aware of this outlandish mistake. He received an e-mail back stating that …

" …[the] panel is being removed and will be replaced with correction." The official, Nancy Johnson, noted that it was "truly astonishing that you are the first person to have reported this mistake to The Port Authority. We sincerely appreciate your heartfelt note and the time you took to report this mistake."

How something like this could slip past ANY proofreader astonishes me.

maybe one of those things where someone would assume you'd have to be too stupid to get wrong and just didnt even look at it. what else could it have been?

Well, I'm sure people noticed...they were probably just too lazy to say anything. *shrug* Which is sad.

That or they noticed and thought that surely someone else had already noticed and reported it.

This is why the world needs copy editors, not piddly proofreaders.

It's so easy for something like that to get through. People don't read word for word; they take in groups of words. And if you are familiar with a group of words, oftentimes your brain will just read it the way you remember it. "September 11, 2001" is probably so ingrained into a lot of people's memory that, in that context, any minor variation, "September 11, 2002" or "Semptenber 11, 2001" for example, would be read incorrectly if you were reading it like you are reading this: casually.

That's why I find one of the best ways to proofread (mostly for spelling, but sometimes for grammar) is to read backwards.

Besides, people are only human.

what he said.

it's a truism of proofreading that it's exactly stuff like this, where your eyes have a tendency to skim over it, where typos are most likely to get through.

its not all that surprising to me... i see spelling and punctuation errors all the time in novels that i read... i mean spellcheck... its not hard... but something like this is on a whole other level.... maybe dan quayle was the proofreader...

Yup Cigarette is right. I would say that amongst my friends/acquaintenences they would consider me a overly detailed person and a avid reader. But to be honest I had to read this article three times before I noticed the qoutes and the incorrect date.

You do not read word for word and your mind absorbs words in groups in the way it expects to see them in the current context.

Heh, on my first pass I said to myself, "I am sure that is the correct spelling for Pivotal"
tongue

Looked right past the date and the qoutes. DOH!! blush

yeah... there was a recent tabloid that had a prediction for 9-11-2004, and I totally had in my mind 2001 of that date... it wasn't till I saw the atomic cloud in the background and thought, "oh, we didn't have a nuke there..." that I actually read what the shoddy fishwrap actually was garbling on about.

i think i can see how some people mistake it. i just read it and didnt notice the mistake at first. it wasnt until i read it looking hard for a mistake that i noticed it. but then again im not always on my A game.
