Or so this guy would have you believe. Kasra Nejatian, a student at Queens University in Kingston Ontario and president of Ontario's Campus Conservatives, is launching an official complaint against Michael Moore under the Canada Elections Act because of remarks he made shortly before the recent Canadian federal election. Moore, who was in Toronto promoting his latest film Fahrenheit 9/11, told reporters that Canadians should not vote Conservative unless they want their country to become more like Bush's America.

[Nejatian] feels Moore broke Section 331 of the Canada Elections Act by urging people not to vote for Conservative Leader Stephen Harper during this summer's federal election.

That law makes it an offence to "in any way induce electors to vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate unless the person is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident."

The mayor of Sarnia, Ontario (who also appeared in Bowling for Columbine) has offered to make Moore an honourary citizen of Sarnia, which could sheild him from the charges.

If Moore is charged and found guilty under the Elections Act, he could face up to 6 months in jail, or a $2000 fine. Of course, that's 2000 Canadian dollars...

that's wild stuff,

just goes to show how petty some people can be, even if you think he's a douche or whatnot, why try to get him thrown in jail or get him fined for something like that

wait a minute...WHAT? This is the most ridiculous crap i've ever heard in my life. Besides for the fact that it's just dumb, how can you make a law saying that all non-Canadians can't comment on who to vote for. What a bunch of crap.

you better be canadian, or you might soon get arrested

i wonder if anyone has ever been charged with this before.

it seems pretty unconstitutional to me; i doubt it would stick.

there's nothing wrong with resenting outside influence, though it's not like this will go anywhere

it's equally ridiculous the mayor has offered to make moore an "honorary citizen" to help him skirt a law.. the mayor should instead work to get that law removed.

i'm thinking that it's not her personal take on the matter, rather it's akin to the spin those opposed to moore put out: "he hates america!", "traitor", "he's fat!" and other ad hominem attacks. hence, that's probably how this netjatian fellow feels: "michael moore must hate canada!"

and i'm not a moore supporter--i've only see roger & me--but i think moves like this (to bring him up on charges based on fairly unspecific remarks) are entirely unnecessary and are a waste of time rather than confronting specific issues.

Ba ha ha ha

Speaking as the former exec of a canadian student union, I've never run into a more poorly-organized and petty group than the campus conservatives.

They love to wear suits and play at being politicians and laywers, but when it comes time to actually perform, they lose focus and drive very quickly. I don't expect this charge to go anywhere.

it's sour grapes, and that's fine.

i seriously doubt mr. moore swayed any canadian voters. at the same time, i believe the Elections Act must be enforced. Canada and it's citizens are always super-concerned about outside influence.

I'm kidding.
So the dude hates everything now, just because he has an opinion?
He says what he does to attract media attention... if it wasn't extreme, noone would care.

No no no ... you're getting this all wrong.

It has nothing to do with Michael Moore. It hasto do with it being a Canadian that is complaining.

I thought it was a widely known fact that all Canadians are completely stupid?

well said.

nothing like an elected leader publicly saying he is going to basicly subvert the law.

If anyone who normally votes Conservative was persuaded by someone simply telling them not to, they're too stupid to be allowed to vote.

yeah but isn't that what politics are all about....

what are these issues you speak of anyway. I mean come on, Vince McMahon couldn't come up with entertainment that is better than the spectacle that is current American politics.

Seriously.
