Yeah, I've always had good experience with Dell. I have a p3 laptop I bought in 2000 that still works great. I still use it for work all the time. Though with the state of the art 650 Mhz processor of 2000, it now seems SLOW as hell...smile

I highly recommend a IBM thinkpad,
just good solid computers and I honestly prefer the design to the dells, sony etc etc

I am all about Toshiba or sony vaio. i have a Toshiba Satellite that's seen me through a year and a half of world travel with nary a problem--got it closeout cause they were discontinuing the model. . .850 bucks.
30 gig hard drive, intel celeron 1.2 GhZ processor, dvd cd-rw drive, etc. Not super duper, but more than enough for me!
Sony Vaio is, of course, the genki genki ichiban number one dog out there, but it is also way more expensive.
But they're damn hot computers.

on another forum that i'm on i posted a similar thread, b/c i'm also looking to buy a laptop. i only provided two choices though: dell or apple. most people said go with the apple. of the pc laptops, i'd probably go with a dell, sony, or ibm. you might also consider referring to 'consumer reports' mag for laptop picks/ratings.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 600m for $1320 + change, and I love it.

Pentium M 1.4GHz (Centrino)
512MB 266MHz DDR RAM
40GB 5400RPM HDD
32MB ATI Mobility 9000
14.1" XGA LCD
24x CD-RW/DVD-ROM
10/100/1000Mb Ethernet card
56k V.92 modem

Remember that with Dell, refirbished PCs/laptops are an excellent way to save money. 90% of the time the laptops are just returns because the person didn't want it, or they've been fixed to perfect working condition. I'm sure it's the same with other companies. Check their policies regarding refurbished items if you're going to go that route.

Here's something I just learned from hard experience: if you buy an extended warranty, make sure it covers accidental damage.

I spilled a Diet Coke in my old one and I was just out of luck. frown

Luckily, I've replaced it with a Dell Inspiron 5150 that I'm really digging.

Hewlet Packard's are pretty solid, as are IBM's ... I like the big global company who make stuff..it just lasts longer.

my compaq finally died on me after years of service, and now i rock the HP pavillion ZE4420

mine is a refurb, and this series of HP notebooks are based off of the Compaq EVO, which were commercial laptops, built to last

if you cant stand windos, get a linux distro and you are set.

AMD processors are best for laptops, from a battery standpoint. the CPU scales back the speed for apps that dont need 1.8Ghz . so if ou plan to get some life from the battery think AMD

i cant believe the VAIO support here. i hated the housing on mine. it felt like a toy. it was fra-geelee.

averatec 3200 series subnotebook (1in x 12" and 4lbs):

40gig
1.05ghz AMD athlon xpm
256mb ram
cdrw/dvd
built in wireless

its very small, light, fast and cheap. im going to marry it.

I've seen/heard bad bad bad things about Viaos. I'm kind of the designated computer geek at my work, and I've had three dead Viao laptops brought to me. HD failure, monitor failure, cracked cases...

These were all older models though. Maybe they improved?

Love my Mac. smile

See, I'd still love to get a Mac laptop. However, I'm not a huge fan of the OS. I'd get used to it, though, and fall in love with it just like many others have love . For now I'll just pet my iPod. That's connected to my PC laptop.
