these books used to give me nightmares when i was little... my fav story is the one about that guy sleeping and he wakes up to find those giant cat-things talking about eating him. or the one where that guy skins people and dries the hides on the roof of a shed...

I've been talking about how awesome it would be to take the best stories in there and attempt to make little short films out of them.

but it'd be so hard to capture the feeling that the illustrations nail perfection

the only story that really scared me was about a girl in her bedroom with something outside the window. it was just so simple and vague.

my copies of the books mysteriously disappeared eeek

or maybe i gave them away and forgot about it.

In fifth grade, my teacher decided to read some of the stories in class as a treat for our good behavior. She finished one of the stories and it so spooked the class that, when she went onto the next, one of the girls decided to leave the room.

Best illustrations ever.

The picture from Something Fell From Aloft (Above?) was really gross, same with... Clankety Clank. Ew!

Oh man, I had this comedian friend and one of his bits was to read one of those stories aloud (the one about the kid who had to spend the night in the house and the head fell down the chimney and his dog died of fright) and fuck, it was HILARIOUS.

hmmm I don't remember those books. Must mean that my sister never read them, and she read all that stuff. Weird.

I typically read all the kids books she read, even though I was 8 years older than her, because well I love to read...anything and everything.

When I was a kid, my brother liked these books and I liked the proto-html of choose your own adventures series. In particular, the TSR module adaptations and the works of Joe Dever, who graciously allows them to be not so proto anymore.

That's the first story that popped in my mind when I saw this thread! I used to be obsessed with those books. I liked the story where spiders came out of that lady's face.
I just gave all of mine to my little brother and the other night he and his friends set up a tent and read the stories by flashlight just like my friends and I used to do!

Does anyone know if that show "Are You Afraid of the Dark" still comes on? I used to love that show.

those books were fucking scary!!! the pictures especially, ew.

i still think about that story where the guy in the hospital kills the guy in the bed by the window so he could move to the bed by the window, but when he gets there all he can see is a brick wall.

One of the illistations kept me from reading the story it went to for about a year after I got it...dont remember which one...man, those were great books.

They re-made "Are you Afraid of the Dark" a few years ago w/ new kids, but it wasn't the same w/o Sardo (No mister, accent on the 'do'), or the other story tellers. Nick should really release some of its old shows on DVD.
