I read a really cool poem about Bukowski regaling his virtues (like caring for stray cats and loving classical music, and his work ethic) but the only thing anyone seems to talk about is his drinking.

we had some religious born again assholes on campus today. this happens a lot and i decided to go and start reading some bukowski to piss them off. i randomly pick 'trying to get even' from love is a dog from hell. boy oh boy did they hate that one. they totaly went off about what would drive me to read such an immoral poem. but i don't care.

Burning in Water, Drowning in flame. thats pretty much in my heart for special reasons... Also, Bukowski is not the greatest living american poet who just so happens to be dead, that would probably be Sylvia Plath... anyways, I love Buk, and really... You get so alone at times, that it just makes sense.

What makes them assholes? Because they were 'born again', because they've become so enraptured by their faith, that they want to share it with other people that they know, so that they believe, they can help people. Way to rage against the machine.

I'ts not the methodology I would practice, but you seem to come off as the bigger asshole just trying to piss people of for their own beliefs.

The thing about Bukowski is that he's good at speaking to the masses.

That doesn't mean he's good or bad, just that he's popular.

I recommend getting ahold of his books of poems that he saved for publishing after his death. Some of his bestest (but mostly shittiest) work in there!

It's a line from a song called "Bukowski". Chill, mate.

"Sex is interesting, but it's not totally important. I mean it's not even as important (physically) as excretion. A man can go seventy years without a piece of ass, but he can die in a week without a bowel movement. " - Charles Bukowski

He's an amazing writer. I luv him!
love

And his choice in women was impeccable!

Although his style rides a formulate one-trick pony a la Palahniuk, he was still a very good writer and enjoyable, especially during the holiday season.

I refuse to go ANYWHERE without one of his books with me! When I was living in Boston I hung out at the Bukowski Tavern (arguably one of the best layed back relatively unknown bars in the city). My favorite quote?...:

Some people never go crazy...What boring lives they must lead.
-Charles Bukowski (or was it Henry Chinaski?) LOL

it's actually:
"some people never go crazy.
what truly horrible lives
they must lead."

Sorry, but I'm a purist.

I'll disagree with this Plath statement simpley because Sylvia's writing has probably inspired as many suicides as Bukowski's have talked people out of.

Oh, and fuck born-agains. Would that they were in it "to share it" and "help people."
