Two adopted children were locked in a cage for over thirteen years. Both boys were beaten with brooms and shoehorns, sodomized, and had to occasionally drink their own urine when water was unavailable. They had to wear diapers as their foster parents refused to let them go to the bathroom. Canadian police and child services found them and the parents have stood trial. The result? Nine months in prison for both parents.

The crown was looking for a six- to eight-year sentence for the woman, and a three- to five-year sentence for the man. The woman's lawyer had asked for a 12-month conditional sentence, and the man's lawyer had asked for a six-month conditional sentence.

Under the Criminal Code, the maximum sentence is 10 years for forcible confinement and the same for assault with a weapon, and two years for failing to provide the necessities of life.

that is too fucked up. I thought you got 9 months for looking at someone funny. 13 years of torture, about the same frown

I've been saying that everything is better in Canada but their government. Now it seems their judicial system leaves a bit to be desired as well.

those parents should be sent to the jungles of papua new guinea, to be hunted by cannibals.

i'm down with that cannibals idea, but smear them in honey first, so the army ants can have fun.

Taking into consideration the woman's claim that she suffered physical, psychological and sexual abuse as a child

No, I think this family has had enough of that.

Reading his decision, Halikowski said although the couple's actions bordered on torture, they were not carried out in a cold or calculating fashion.

It may have started with good intentions but "descended darkly into abusive behaviour that bordered on torture," Halikowski said.

What the fuck?! How in the hell does imprisoning children in makeshift cages even remotely come close to "good intentions"? That judge needs to have a CAT scan, pronto.

This was a horrible miscarriage of justice.

There is no excuse for treating children this way, no credible evidence that this sort of thing results in 'better' kids or helps with raising 'difficult' children.

The judge is a fool or a drunkard, or maybe both.

This calls for vigilante and mob action. Drag these people from their houses and lynch them on the streets.

I hope there's people demonstrating in Canada over this nonsense.

The sodomy alone should have gotten them years. Sad story. Poor kids.

When the parents get "inside" the other inmates will know of them. They will have 9 months of hell.

ouch! that's a little harsh to judge the entire nation based solely on a single judicial sentence. i seriously hope you're not implying that canadians as a whole like to see this shit happen. i would venture far enough to say that all of the citizens who read about this case would be disgusted and outraged at this judge's sentence. the article did say an appeal can be filed within 30 days, which i hope to god that the crown pursues...

Taking into consideration the woman's claim that she suffered physical, psychological and sexual abuse as a child

this is not defense enough to allow such a light sentence after 15 years of abuse on two defenseless children.

I'm not sure why they couldn't have tacked on assault (sexual and otherwise) onto the sentence... seems a little weird. I second the cannibal motion.

Clip the article and save it for anyone who thinks abortion should be outlawed. This case weighs strongly in favor of making it and/or sterilization mandatory in many cases.

In a sane world, I would think the first part of the sentence in this case should be irreversible surgical sterilization of both parents at their own expense.

Seeing as the kids weren't their own, they were the wife's sister's, I don't think that's really an issue.
