There is a theory that says our fatty diet is the reason boy bands are so popular. The rich diet triggers puberty in girls sooner, and for various reasons, they imprint on boys their own age, leading to a lifelong preference for tenors.

Sadly, I cannot remember the source, so it may have been just an internet crank.

Well, there is the old standby answer:
It has very little to do with women, and everything to do with men. Men care about female attractiveness more than nearly any other characteristic. So, men will be drawn toward a beautiful woman over a talented one.

Thats a little simplistic for my tastes, so Id like to hear any other theories.

Thats what I was going to say. It seems like its the most important thing for women to be attractive and for men to be successful.
I know many men that have admitted to me that the first thing they think about when meeting a woman in any context is wether or not they would have sex with her.
