Saul Williams is one those renaissance type guys. He is an author, poet, poetry slammer and a professional actor. He first sprung to public attention with the movie Slam which he also wrote. Since then he’s become a nationally known poet with several books to his credit. His latest is “said the shotgun to the head” which is the account of a man so ravished by a kiss that it distorts his highest and lowest frequencies of understanding into an incongruent mean of babble and brilliance.

Oh my god. I love this guy. I saw him on the Slam scene back in the mid-nineties and grabbed the movie when it came out. He was one of the people who got me into performing Slam. Yay!!! Thanks so much for publishing this. biggrin He's so fucking cool.

saul williams is an absolute genius! i first heard of him from the fantastic SLAM, and then got his amethyst rock star album, which is utterly brilliant. the track om nia mercian is one of my all-time favourites. he is a true lyrical master, a poet that can really fire up his audience.

i cannot wait to read said the shotgun to the head, especially as it features a blurb from the mighty zack de la rocha - "STSTTH is a invitation to live and die in the moment, a confrontation of the politics of empire, a dare to transform oneself in the face of fear and a post 9/11 love song all in one"

said the shotgun to the head is the only thing on my shopping list above the sg book!

Slam got me into poetry as well-- and that play that nearly no one saw? I was there on closing night. It was brilliant.

Saul and other slam poets rarely get the credit they deserve. It's good to know that a true creative genius from the slam community actually can go somewhere and, hopefully, make an impact...

this is so odd because i listened to she on cd before i went to bed last night and remember how much i love his work.

i've been a saul fan for years and though i'm not one to become so much into poetry as i am with him i couldn't not get sucked into his work because his words struck me on a personal level. and for a slam poet to take is words to music when he released amythest rock star made me into him that much more. the only reason i went to see mars volta in october is because saul opened for them. i hope he tour in the near future because i would love to see him again.

Seeing SLAM was what opened my eyes to poetry--I could recognize it as being art, but it wasn't something I could wrap my head around. But seeing Saul in that flick, and hearing him perform, got me to a new way of thinking.

I'm a huge Saul Williams fan. Slam is one of my favorite films, and Slamnation, the documentary from around the same period, is also well worth seeing if you can get a hold of it (I bought it on Amazon). Thanks for the awesome interview!

how did i miss this?
this man has made me question how i view things, express myself and deal with creation in general. i played amethyst rockstar everyday for two years straight. i haven't read read shotgun yet but i don't doubt that there's something brilliant about it.
i fucking love his work
i saw him in detroit a few years back at the electronic music festival, with a band. it was an amazing performance.

i could hear that a million times and still be mesmerized by it.

I find it funny that, having never heard of this person before two days ago, I purchased "said the shotgun to the head" yesterday, and today, I see a neat interview with the fellow on one of my favorite websites.

I believe this bodes well for my enjoyment of the book. (as soon as I finish "Self-titled" by a different writer.)
