going through the same thing myself right now..CO is a conservatist shittank, I haven't been able to find work in 2 years, thats why I became self-employed..no benefits, no co-workers or anything, but it's money in my pocket. I have still been looking and applying this whole time and I haven't been considered for one job yet mad

HMV, a record/dvd store. I actually sought them out because it's well-known they don't care how you look.

I've kept from getting more tattoos/percings because of workplace dress codes, but finally I said fuck it; Instead of letting my job dictate my life, from now on my life dictates my job.

On that note - If companies are going to keep insisting their employees don't have piercings/tatoos/funky hair, do they not realize that one day they won't have anybody working for them?

I am an industrial seamstress. I make all kinds of weird thingss for Boeing and other individual projects. For example, I'm making emergency strechers for a local hospital this week.

Since I don't have to deal with the public, they couldn't honestly give two shits about what I look like. It's great! smile

Freelance writer. Again not having to work face to face with the public helps a lot.

You have one of the most awesomest tattoos anyway, so it'd be totally worth it biggrin

The computer science/IT field seems to be very tolerant of this. First I think because it's much more about what you can bring to the table rather than what you look like -- the computer doesn't care about your tats or piercings. wink

People in this field tend to look "different" in one way or another anyway. If it's not body mods, it's goofy misfitting clothing, threadbare t-shirts with holes in them, bad haircuts, coke-bottle glasses, corpulent or emaciated bodies, etc. You have to be tolerant in this industry if you want to attract good talent, so people stopped being picky about aesthetics long ago.

This is even true in traditionally very conservative sectors such as the federal government (where I work). A co-worker of mine has his ears pierced and full arm sleves, but also has a PhD in computer science from Brown and is very respected in his particular area of expertise. Bottom line, no one gives a shit about what he looks like.

its really tough for me to 'express myself' becuase I work in a restaurant, and thats really the only experience I have, so I cant get any other kind of job.

I work in a restaurant too, have for 2 years now... at 3 different places. You just need to find a more "trendy"/open restaurant.

My girl and I had this conversation earlier tonight. She was working at a bank where she had to cover up, put her hair down and wear retainers. She has tatoos on her arms, wrist, chest... and peircings on her wrist, chest, lip,... so it was a task everyday to cover up. I wore a retainer in my labret and took my eyelets out when I worked at the brokerage. I had to wear long sleeves as well. So it can be done but... it gets annoying to have to do that everyday. And our ears still have big holes when the jewelry is out so it shows still. She just got a job at Buffalo exchange as a bookkeeper so now she doesnt have to do all of that. We came up with this list= most modern clothing stores, most music industry jobs, esthetician and hairstylist jobs, club or bar jobs, sex industry workers, hard labor jobs, and as listed above...some computer jobs. Im looking into webdesign... but my jobs in the last four years have mostly been clubs, bars, and music stores. Hers have been clothing, serving, and bookkeeping. Then there's allways skateshops, comic stores, and misc. shops like that.

I do whatever I like really, nobody has ever commented on my tats, and I don't even try to cover them up with anything.

i work for a pretty respectable law firm and i have quite a few visible tatts and piercings. i think it depends on the people - not the line of work.

If you're concerned about that, just consider where on your body you are going to have your ink done. All my tattoos are easily concealed if need be although I never have felt the need to go out of my way to conceal them from anyone. Andit does seem that places are getting more and more cool with body mods than they were say 10 years ago.
