I'm confused. My Trader Joe's sells both wine and beer. And groceries. We need a Minnesotan to answer this. I'll laugh if TJ's has 3.2 beer.

I like the place. But it's not exactly buying local, is it...

true story.

A local resturant we will call call Zhocolate Javen here in town makes the Trader Joes brand frozen pork chile verde. Awesome right? They make it, ship it to Monrovia for distrubution, then it gets distrubuted to the warehouses (ours is in Phoenix). It then gets put in our truck and unloaded 5 days later.

The yuppies here eat it up, and it sells out quicky, so sometimes we were out of stock. "when are you getting it in?" they'd whine. Due to our strick confidentiallity bullsqua we couldn't tell them to go down the road 3 block and make a right. So they'd wait 5-7 days for it to come in agian.

They've always sold beer AND wine here in grocery stores. Sure you're not confusing us with Utah or someplace?

Here in LA, the home of TJs, there's pretty much at least one in every neighborhood.

However, my mother lives in Detroit, where TJs have started opening only recently. She sends me a steady stream of food from her local TJ, even though I can go down the street and get the same food.

Isn't that cute? I love my mom.

Washington allows beer and wine sales in grocery stores. They don't allow hard alcohol sales.

thats a shame. they sell this white label russian bottle of vodka for 10 bucks. went amazing with cans of hansen's energy juice. was cool waaaay before redbull and vodka.

p.s. - green tea mochi beats everything.

They can only sell beer here, just like any other grocery. Wine, >3.2 beer, and other higher proof spirits are only legally able to be sold in liquor stores.

Or as the City Pages puts it -

Why can't we buy wine in grocery stores?

Because liquor-store owners like it that way. In each of the last three legislative sessions, a bill has been introduced to allow grocery stores to begin selling wine--and each time this seemingly benign proposal has been defeated. Liquor-store owners bankroll one of the most effective lobbying operations in the state. There are two main organizations that lobby on their behalf: the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association and the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association. This year, the MLBA spent $123,468 at the Capitol, while the MMBA doled out $61,200. "The liquor lobby has just crushed us," says Bernie Hesse, an organizer with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 789, which has lobbied on behalf of grocery-store wine sales. Hesse recalls that one year the liquor lobby bolstered its cause by spotlighting a teenager who had recently been through rehab. The young man was employed at Rainbow Foods and testified before the legislature that having wine available at his workplace would pose a grave temptation. This year, supporters of expanded wine sales thought they had enough votes lined up, but then a few key Democratic legislators, most notably Minneapolis Senator Larry Pogemiller, flipped allegiances. "The liquor lobby has got their hand in the pocket of the DFL caucus," Hesse argues. "They've got a relationship that has been going on forever."

I have to travel over an hour to the nearest Trader Joes. My state has a lame law prohibiting wine sales in grocery stores, and Trader Joes doesn't want to open a store if they can't sell their wine in it. Luckily, the hour-plus trip isn't really THAT far, so I just stock up periodically...

My closest TJ does not sell alcohol for the same kind of laws.

The Framingham store carries wine, but I understand that Mass. law includes some sort of exceptions regarding beer/wine sale regulations. The inability to sell their wine in RI is the reason I've heard cited by TJ's as to why they're not planning to open a store here.

After I randomly managed to get my hand on a circular and perusing their wares, I've been wanting a TJ to open near me for some time. The three closest to me are all like @least 45 minutes each way.

I need a car. And a license. Badly.

I love Trader Joe's but the nearest one is pretty far away. Me and my boyfriend do hit it up anytime we go to Chicago though. Cheap brie and the best tomato soup I've ever had.

I fucking hate my local co-op. It's always full of overpriced food and self-righteous assholes.

That's one thing I love about Minneapolis - awesome co-ops, everywhere. Not the pretentious kind, either. Always a plus.

They do that well, don't they. I never knew I had it so good growing up.

There are no real co-ops in Seattle.
