Super Size Me, the film that depicts Morgan Spurlock eating only McDonald’s food for thirty days, snuck up on the fast food chain in the U.S. So, McDonald’s Australia has picked up some of the slack, going so far as to hand out apples after patrons have seen the movie.

In a television commercial launched on all major networks Wednesday night, McDonald's Australia CEO Guy Russo describes the documentary as being "about a person that decides to overeat."
Russo responded to Spurlock's claims that eating burgers for 30 days is bad for you by saying, "You're right.
"Surprise, surprise, he finds out it was an error," Russo said in the ad. "I could have told him that."

McDonald’s has spent approximately AUS$2 million on a counter-campaign. It has also bought 30-second spots to play at the beginning of Super Size Me.

I'm amazed that this Morgan Spurlock idiot made it through 30 years of eating only McDonald's food. Anybody that stupid should hae removed himself from the gene pool long before 30 years was up.

Heh, good luck McDonald's. No one that sees this movie is going to want to eat ANYTHING for a few hours, much less something that they have had their dirty corporate paws on. wink

It was an interesting experiment. From what I recall, his girlfriend (a vegan chef) was thoroughly disgusted with him but understood why he was doing it.

I would not be suprised if the apples have been deep friend in genetically engineered 3 week old hydrogenated CIS fatty acids and then injected with 9 pages worth of assorted "safe" chemicals to enhance and preserve the thus aforementioned genetically modified insecticide drenched apple. Good guys.

doesn't this make about as much sense as ohh say Phillp Morris handing out bubble gum to people coming out of a documentary about cancer?

see... because phillp morris makes cigarettes... not bubble gum... see that's why... fuck it.

Idiot? I'm sorry, but I think what Spurlock did was extremely socially progressive.

He put his life on the line to make a point -- would that we all had the courage to do that sort of thing.

Though it is kind of silly that "putting your life on the line" in this case means eating a lot of burgers and drinking a lot of soda.

I work at a movie theater that is currently showing Super Size Me so I've gotten to see it a lot. I just wanted to mention three things in regards to it:

1) Spurlock's experiment is extreme, but that's the point. Like Rage Against the Machine said, you can't use a moderate cure on an extreme illness.

2) People like Spurlock and Michael Moore often use hyperbole to prove points but, to be honest, that's perfectly fine with me because I think you need some liberal propaganda to counter the buttloads of conservative and/or corporate propaganda out there. As far as I'm concerned, they can just go on and keep it up.

3) Super Size Me is more an effective movie than a good one, but that counts too.

Sorry to be so conversationally anal-retentive but I like to number my thoughts sometimes.

Let's just hope Farenheit 911 doesn't open too soon to have a lasting effect on the election.

Spurlock was in REALLY bad shape after the 30 days. He gained over 20 pounds and his liver was totally shot. He went to see a doctor, who told him that if he didn't stop, he would die. It took Spurlock over a year to repair the damage to his body that took him only 30 days to cause.

McDonalds isn't food, it's deep fried crap. Whew, those Big Macs sure are tasty though!

Hasn't McDonalds taking the largest size of their value meals off the menu? I guess that's sort of a step in the right direction...

I want to see this movie but I know it will depress me.

I'm not a big fast food eater, but still it upsets me that a lot of the people I care about eat one or two times a day where ever they can catch a quick meal. frown

What kills mw is that this guy went through the whole ordeal to make some point on food, and no one is really going to care. How many people don't know the McDonalds food is bad for you? When I eat there, I know that this isn't the best thing for me. I know that this isn't diet or health friendly. The thing is, most people don't care.

The apple thing is hillarious, because when you think about it, virtually every numbskull who has ever talked about "Eating healthier!" always goes out at some point and gets "an apple". And I've known a few of these people at different jobs. They buy "the apple" and it sits on their desk with the intention of it being eaten. But it never does. And it sits there as the person keeps on shoving crap into their food hole endlessly.

Yeah, an apple. That will totally balance out the french fries and shakes!

Like drinking a TAB while eating a cheeseburger.
