KEVIN SMITH!!!!
without a doubt, a lousy hack.

It seems very fashionable to accuse Kevin Smith of being a lousy hack at the moment. However he has never professed to be a great director. I get a bit fed up of people attacking his films, if you like them watch them, if not don't watch them.

I'm sure none of the directors on this thread have professed to be great directors. Kevin Smith is so terrible it challenges all known forms of terrible and forms new definitions of the word.

Explain terrible, while I accept the cinematography in his films leaves a lot to be desired, the writing is of a high standard and in the majority of cases very funny.

i didn't say anbything about going from indie to mainstream, i said it was garbage.

From Websters
Terrible: See: Jersey Girl, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob
Mediocre: Chasing Amy
Decent: Clerks, Mallrats(i actually thought that was funny)

For this the guy is treated like some sort of great writer, and is allowed to pontificate endlessly???

OVER RATED.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back:

Jay: What the fuck is the internet?

Holden: The internet is a communications tool, used the world over. Where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornograpy with each other.

This may not make him a great writer, but it is fairly accurate. If you disagree look at the site we're on and what we are discussing.

One for the overrated barrel: David Cronenberg. I never really liked existenZ because I considered it to be Cronenberg makes video games about his bio-machine fetish agenda. Then I listened to the commentary by him and realised that his bio-machine agenda is fascinating and contains many insights into our relationship with technology. Then I realised that this did not mean his film wasn't just an excuse to make everything about a bio-machine agenda. I think many of his films suffer from this continuing obsession. When it pays off 'The Fly', 'Naked Lunch' it's really good. When it doesn't it sucks.

McD's server: What drink would you like with that?
Cronenberg: Whichever one will act like oil in the engine of my body.

WTF?

One for the underrated barrel: Paul Verhoeven. I'm going to hold may hands up and say the guy's sexual politics are totally bizarre as far as I can tell but if you listen to his commentaries on Robocop and Starship Troopers you start to realise that his political agenda is forthright, clear and important. Even if you don't agree with it.

He questions our most basic assumptions and I am always amused by seriously right wing miltaristic types who cite Starship Troopers as a vindication for aggression and conflict. I have always veered between thinking the man's some kind of genius and some kind of chump Maybe if I get hold of a commentary to the underwhelming Hollow Man I will change my mind again...

I would say the coen brothers but I really liked"O brother, where art thou?", and "the hudsucker proxy", and "barton fink".

But I absolutely hated Fargo and the other one.... the one everyone will slash my throat for hating. what can I say? I HATED it.

Shamalan is proving to be a one-trick pony; his movies always seem to revolve around some "shocking" twist that, increasingly, is turning out to be more and more lame. I mean, if the "shock twist" in his new movie is indeed what I have read it is (I think it's mentioned earlier in this thread, but, if not, I won't spill it), this one's going to be his worst one yet.

The Village is actually just a village in our time that is hidden in some deep ass forest. The monsters are construction workers and the machines they drive and they're chopping down the forest. The red is spraypaint meaning they're going to cut down the houses.

Or something stupid like that.

Hang on, wasn't that the plot to "Ferngully -The Last Rainforest"? surreal

Kevin Smith is a clever writer and does a good job with comedy I think. Granted, he really isn't an inspired director but he never claimed to be. What I like about Kubrick is that his films vary from one another so greatly but they are still obviously Kubrick films. I can't think of a director who's entire body of work I dislike. Nearly every director has at least one film I consider a dud even if others don't.
