'Dodgeball'? Personally, I had the misfortune of seeing the previews for all three of these so-called "films" on the TV tonight, and now I hate our freedom. How do these shitpiles continue to be made? HOW?? Why have we not risen as one with torches and pitchforks to slay these people?

I agree with that whole list... EXCEPT The Prisoner of Azkaban.

Go see it, then tell me how stupid you think it is.

Actually, Garden State looks brilliant, Harry Potter 3 is getting rave reviews and looks like it'll be good unlike the first two, and the first Spiderman movie was excellent and I have high hopes for the second.

As much as I hate stupid movies, and as much of a film elitist as I am, I have to play devil's advocate here.

As much as you might hate to admit it, we NEED popcorn movies. We need stupid, low brow movies that will appeal to the masses and which pander to the lowest common denominator. It's what keeps the film industry lucrative, allowing for intelligent films to be made. The intelligent, well made films aren't the ones that are going to make the money that keeps the production companies in buisness.

Take the African film industry, for example. There pretty much isn't one. This is because, the few filmmakers that there are in Africa, are artistic directors. Many of them were educated in French film schools and try to make films about the political climate of their countries. These have no mass appeal, and therefore attract no audience. Thus, there is little funding for the film industry and very few films are made. It is normal for a full length film in Africa to be about a half hour long, because it's hard to afford the resources for anything beyond that.

Like it or not, intelligent films are the leeches on the film industry. They don't make a lot of money, and they generally do cost a lot to make since indipendent directors tend to be meticulous and, well, let's face it, filmmaking is NOT cheap. So, stupid and low brow films are, unfortunately, necessary to allow the really great films to be made.

Wait, those were movies you thought were going to be good?

Oh, okay, that makes a little more sense.

Ugh. Dodgeball.

You don't realize the hate, the burning hate I have for Ben Stiller. You may ''hate'' some actor, or actress, or band...but you don't hate them like I hate him.

He's the worst thing that's happened to entertainment since....since nothing. Worst. Ever. Can't he take a fucking summer off? How 'bout he blow his brains out. Holy shit. I'm seething.

Calm down Ben. I think you're just mad because Stiller stole your name.

I think Ben Stiller is hillarious, he just chooses really bad movies to do.

But Royal Tenanbaums pretty much makes up for any bad decisions he's made.

Movies really don't have to be stupid to attract a lot of business. They just have to be good and accessible to everyone. Everytime anyone makes the "It's just a popcorn movie" speech I want to tear my hair out because what they're really doing is trying to rationalize having gambled their money on the wrong film. People could admit they don't need to watch movies at all, and that money spent on something they don't like or that was made with only profit in mind was a waste of money.

I agree not all films need to be arthouse or deep or embettering, but that doesn't mean that they don't need to be good at all. I wish people would turn some of that righteous consumer 'tude they dump on me all day long on the condescending shit they float their brains in.

Sadly, now a days, they do, thanks to the precedent set by such wonderful men as the Farrelly brothers. puke Yes, in an ideal world, there would be an abundance of good movies which had wide appeal and everyone would be happy. And there are a few good movies that have wide appeal. Lord of the Rings was an excellent example. How many films can boast that they won an Academy Award AND were able to sell action figures.

Yet, there's still a high demand for dumb films and they bring in a lot of money. And for intelligent films to be made, there needs to be a lucrative film industry. Thus, we get films like "Soul Plane".

No, my name isn't Prince Bullshit Babylon Jerkoff, unlike him.

See...Royal Tenanbaums was a tough spot for me. I love that movie...and yet...it has Ben Stiller. So I got wasted and watched that bitch 4 times. Ben Stiller does nothing but ham it up and mug for the camera. I wish he'd been hit by that car instead of the dog. In real life. He never shows any emotion or feeling. He's just a vapid asshole.

And after 9/11 he told SNL he wanted to be the first host of the year, to do the first post-9/11 show in NY. They already had Reese Witherspoon, or Dunst or someone like that. He said ''Well, I do it first week, or I'm cancelling my second week hosting gig."--They didn't let him and he dropped hosting a week prior to rehearsals and writing. He's a former member of the show!

He will die, for I alone am best.

Oh, on another note:

Bill Murray was chosen as the voice of Garfield for the movie because he has a similar voice to Lorenzo Music who did the voice on the brilliantly clever Garfield and Friends cartoon show. Their voices are so similar that Lorenzo Music even performed the part of Bill Murray's character from Ghostbusters in the Ghostbusters cartoon series.

And so, I ask you this one simple question: WHY IS BILL MURRY DOING THE VOICE COMPLETELY WRONG?!?!

Have you seen the commercials? That's not Garfield! Garfield does not have the energy to go zipping through a fucking airport terminal! And if you're making a CG Garfield, MAKE A CG ODIE TOO, DAMMIT! And that guy in the movie does not look pathetic enough to be John Arbuckle.

Sorry, I know I've been playing devil's advocate for bad movies here, but I don't tolerate bastardizations of my childhood favorites.

And with that, I'm going to sleep. Night everyone!

Maybe Soul Plane is good? The problem is we have different definitions of "stupid" and "quality". The Farrelly Brothers movies are generally smart and smartly made movies that celebrate stupidity and stupid jokes - There's Something About Mary was a masterpiece in places. What I don't like is when people see a movie they didn't like, or that let them down, and then rather than blame it on the filmmakers they fault themselves for having unrealistic standards.

Soul Plane is what it is. Sometimes these things are done well despite what they're made of.

I don't see Farrelly Brothers movies as smart movies celebrating stupidity. I see it as two frat boys who are still in awe over the fact that they get paid to make movies out of the drunken conversations that start out with "Dude, you know what would be funny?"

But you are right, sometimes movies end up being good despite everything that would suggest otherwise.

I love how we seem to be going back and forth in defending sides of this issue.

But, I really must sleep now. Good night.

He's staring in Garfield The Movie, he's pathetic enough to be John Arbuckle.

Man, I lost all respect for Garfield when Jim Davis pretty much stopped doing it, and was handing it off to a team of copy cat ''assistants''....the old stuff was great...but then again, I was impressed by Calvin and Hobbes DIY, indie-rock-punk-rock refusal to sell out and calling people out for doing so. Like Jim Davis.

Now back to Ben Stiller...

Both Kingpin and There's Something About Mary are masterpieces of what they're trying to achieve: a low-rent, low brow comedy goldmine, which is fucking hard to do if you're actually stupid. If you try and look for something more in them (like a good performance by Ben Stiller) you'll find nothing.
