ive been thinking about this myself. I really think I'm just going to do it and let them deal with it afterwards. Not much they can do about it at that point.

I'm thinking, if you're too puss to tell your stepdad what you're going to do with your own body, maybe you should reconsider getting one until you move out on your own. Make it a coming of age thing.

No offense or anything - I'm not trying to be mean, it's just how it sounds, but If you can't even talk about it with your parents, then you may not be ready for such a big event. Chill, take some time to think it over.

Unless you have relatives who'll toss you out on the lawn for coming home with a tattoo, then don't risk it, obviously. But, when I got my first one, I didn't mention it to my family; I got it, came home and showed it to them once I walked in the door. My father sounded disappointed when I told him, but when I showed it to him, he liked it.

Although if you're planning on doing the whole naked-chick-on-the-bicep tattoo, I'd assume they wouldn't be too happy with your decision.

Good luck.

Just tell them that you're getting your privates pierced. Let them "talk you down" to a tattoo.

I'll tell you after I tell my mother about my flames.

Wait, I won't be able to tell you because my head will be on a stick in the lawn. Never mind. HAR HAR.

I say be honest and up front with them, before you walk in the door with it. Maybe it will give them time to prepare. Either that, or always wear long shelves? wink

Personally, I'd tell her that you understand her concerns, that you've considered it carefully and that you've made an informed decision (and of course, make sure you have- just in case they ask you about one of their concerns!), but that you want to get a tattoo and this is the design you wanna get and where.
Sometimes parents like to know what you're gonna get, because they have mental images of sleeves and back spreads, etc, instead of individual, tastefully placed tats...
IMHO, Honesty and openness helps diffuse their fears and also helps avoid friction when you've got it done.

I second the person that suggested you wait 'till you move out.

If it's a tattoo you really want, it's a tatto that can wait a little while longer, right? Plus, it'll help cut down on the drama. You don't want this turning into some surreal family sitcom affair.
