I wouldn't associate it with goth. It has the same self-loathing kind of thing to it, but not the dark, gothic style (at least not for the most part).

Emo is emotional music that was originally a type of hardcore punk. Now, it's definition is much harder to describe.

Many people will tell you that the comman usage of the term is incorrect, forgetting the fact that common usage dictates meaning, especially with words like "emo" which I doubt have been entered into any dictionary (besides the urban one).

Basically, emo has come to mean bands that range everywhere from the Get Up Kids to Bright Eyes to Modest Mouse and even At the Drive-In by some people's definitions. In a lot of cases it's synonomous with "indie rock", and thus I use the term "indie" more often, as people don't tend to get into as much of a tizzy over that word as they do over "emo".

I've said all this before on the boards and I'll probably have to say it again: it doesn't matter. Hell, if someone wants to call Elton John emo, I say let them. Definitions are meaningless, just enjoy the music.

P.S. I'm not attacking you for asking for a definition, just attempting to define it while forestalling the annoying comments which are bound to come flying when someone "doesn't define it right".
