but you have to pay for the bread!

Not if you raid the moldy bread that's been sittin gon your friends counter for too long!.

Yeah, ducks'll eat anything! I had a pet duck once that would eat cigarette butts off the floor.

[Edited on May 27, 2004 by sidewalker123]

I don't think you're supposed to feed bread to ducks anymore. Just cracked corn. Birdwatching is fun and free (if you can get your hands on binoculars and a field guide).

There are several inexpensive alternatives to some of the expensive fun things listed. If you like going out to eat, cook and have people over. Even if the food isn't great, the company will be. Find a few other interested people and start a dinner club.

The bar is expensive, but having folks over for drinks isn't quite as bad. If the dinner club sounds like too much work, start there.

Going to the mall isn't expensive, buying shit is! Just go to browse, people-watch, etc. Take pictures of yourself trying on clothes you'd never buy. Take along clipboards and conduct goofy surveys. Fill out credit card applications with fake names and occupations and then compare with friends. Remember to just bring enough cash to buy an Orange Julius.

Buying books is expensive. Borrowing books is cheap. I suck at using my library card, but I frequently borrow and lend books to my family and friends. I also exchange video games with my brother. You get so little money on trade-ins, and it's a way for us to double the number of games we can play (even if he had my copy of Morrowind for a year).

Climbing's great, although it's been difficult to get out this season. While the initial investment is big, it doesn't cost a thing to go out and climb for the day once you're set up.

Someone else mentioned throwing cards, going for a walk, etc. There are lots of things to do. You learned never to say you were bored in my house, my mom would put you to work in a heartbeat.

When I'm really bored I go window shopping - hang out at the local IKEA for a few hours pretending like one of the displays is really your house and kick people out when they try to come in. I remember one time my friend sat on a couch and breastfed while she watched t.v. and none of the staff had the guts to shoo her away.

To clarify, she was breastfeeding a baby... her own.

OK, so you have to indeed pay to get there & stay there, but Washington DC is the best place in the world for free, and quality, entertainment.

Priceline yourself a ticket (every freakin' airline in the world goes there) and a hotel room (check in Arlington, Crystal City, or Chevy Chase...they're all on the Metro and much cheaper than DC itself) and have a great time.

There are no better museums for free anywhere. Unless in the dead of summer, the weather is pleasant. DC is great.

dc is great unless you live there everyday (born and raised- mostly)

going to bars is expensive if you drink - whats the point going if you arent going to drink?! well massive amounts of people and friends, get a coke or something, or limit to a few cheaper drinks. there are a few cool places here that never have covers and i dont drink much anyways so it works out.
just hanging around with people wasting time is always a good idea. its more fun than being alone
rent movies, go out to eat and stick to the appetizer menu or bring a friend and split a meal and just hang around in a restaurant for awhile.
tour around your city and find some awesome cool out of the way place that you never knew existed
and yea get a job

Take walks and learn new routes.

Volunteer at an animal shelter.

Visit your City Park.

Hook up with friends and travel somewhere (you might have to split the cost of gas, but not always!).

Go to your local Craft Store (sometimes they have free lessons on how to do certain crafts and you get to keep what you make!!!!). If none that day, you can waste atleast two hours walking around looking at all the neat stuff! Ideas for later!

Go dumpster diving.

Most local museums will let you in for free (but have a donation box). Art is fun!

I'm sure I could list more.

I was going to say a few of these things. Also, the beach is free. Going to the mountains. Hiking. Yes, it sounds like I am going hippie on you. But I am not.

Yeah, unless you have to purchase a library card which I'm doing today, heh.

Uh, you could go sit in a park? Thats free. God I'm hopeless, everything I do cost money, well at least things that I like to do.

PURCHASE a library card? What kind of assholes are running your library?!

The only time I didn't have to pay to get a library card is when I lived in Philadelphia. When I lived in West Chester and now in Ridley Township, you have to pay. Heh.

I can't tell you how shocked I was to find out that the San Diego Zoo has a $40 entrance fee. I couldn't make myself pay it even though I really wanted to see it.

So if you live near DC go to the zoo. It's free.

They used to have a policy that military got in free if in uniform. Not sure if they still do that or not. doesn't really help if you're not military, but it's something for those stationed in San Diego.

Honestly, San Diego Zoo isn't all it's cracked up to be. I was surprised to see that most of the animals were still behind barred cages. All the other zoos I'd been to had those cement faux habitats.

Oh, and the uniform thing is still true but only between certain months.
