At the relatively young age of 46, Mike Watt is already a punk legend. After meeting D. Boon at age 13 they soon discovered that they were musical soulmates. They went on to form the legendary punk trio the Minutemen, which was the second act ever released on the pivotal SST record label. The band then toured nonstop up until Boon’s death in a van accident.

Not too much was heard from Watt until the next year when a rabid Minuteman fan named Ed Crawford found him and together they formed Firehose...

A few years ago, I had the chance to drive to Texas to play a benefit with Mike, and after spending an afternoon talking with him, he became my ultimate hero. I have nothing but the upmost respect and feel nothing but proud of him.

When life shoots you little decisions and you're stuck, you must ask yourself,

What Would Mike Watt Do?

I was too young to catch the Minutemen but I saw firehose several times and had the honor of shaking Mr. Watt's hand as he came off stage one night in Vancouver. A smokin' bass player and an all-round decent chap. The Minutemen were incredible. Thank you Mike.

i'm a big watt fan, so i didn't get anything new out of it, but it's good to see him getting some exposure here. he's fantastic on stage and "down to earth" in person... watt's one of the few "rock heroes" who has actually earned the label. one of my biggest regrets about leaving California was knowing i'd be missing so many of his gigs. thanks for the spiel.

Out of the mersh, here's mr.Watt himself, one of the coolest guys on earth. He might be 96 and still writing great music. Too bad that fucking accident forced him and his soulmate to split, but i still found big, huge motivation when I put on a Minutemen record. And one lesson i learned is that i might be for some people what Minutemen have been for me, this is a History Lesson (Pt. II) that I learned, so I guess i'll keep on playing.

I saw his photo down there on the main page and my heart did a leap-de-loo. He is so amazing, hot, and fucking cool. I have seen him many times and have talked to him and back in college, we gave him a ride somewhere after they played on campus. My boyfriend's (at the time) band got to open for them and I think that was my ex-'s happiest life moment.

He makes my heart smile.

I have been a huge admirer of his work since the Minutemen. I have seen him play numerous times and have spoken with him briefly in the early 80's. A great artist and a good man.

Mike watt has been my idol since i first heard the minutemen when i was about 13. i actually quit playin guitar & took up the bass because of him but I never actually saw him play live until 4 days ago when he played the download festival at donington, uk with the stooges.
i watched the entire set with a stupid grin on my face the guy is just amazing. The passion he puts into his playing is unbelievable.
The only thing that could have made the weekend better would have been to actually meet the guy.

Mike Watt is the bass god and an inspiration to everyone

i havent heard mention of Firehose in i dont even know how long... my uncle, Bob Lawton, used to manage several punk bands including firehose, sonic youth, mudhoney, buffalo tom and the screaming trees. the mudhoney album 'Five Dollar Bob's Mock Cooter Stew' was named after him.

me and mike watt playing guitars.

this is obviously from 2004, but Mike's obit of Ron Asheton of the Stooges is worth looking up.

Ron Asheton is one of the greatest rock guitarists of all-time. he and Mick Ronson are as underrated as they go. and D. Boon.

jam econo people.
